Calling all punters!

May 16, 2006 10:34

My dearly beloved friends... I am in need of your livers. Who's with me?

PS - note that the race is quite early in the morning, so everyone can get on and enjoy the rest of their suicide sunday.

7th Clare Wine Society Punt Race

As has become an essential Cambridge tradition, this Suicide Sunday, 18th of June 2006, the Clare Wine Society Punt Race will once again be held on the fair river Cam (for those of you who are new to the concept, the Race originated in Clare College, hence the name).

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

DISCLAIMER: The Punt Race generally involves the consumption of large quantities of wine in a boat on the river. There are many inherent dangers to this, and the organisers can accept no responsibility for the consequences of your actions.
You may only participate in the Race if you are a confident swimmer, know your limits in alcohol consumption and not prone to (too) stupid actions when drunk. You are by no means obliged to drink all the wine provided, nor are you obliged to complete the course if you do not feel you can. This is a competition, but staying alive is more important than winning, and much fun is always had by those not taking the Race too seriously.

Suicide Sunday (18th June) 11am

For those of you who haven't participated before, the Race begins by Upper Scudamores (near the Mill), from which point you punt to Dead Man's Bend, turn, come back, go down the rollers (carefully! no surfing!) and punt onwards to Clare lawn. The first crew to arrive is the winner.

Sound easy? Well, en route each crew of 6 will make their way through 10 bottles of wine, which adds an extra bit of joy to the proceedings.

You can select the wine to your own personal taste. Each crew should bring ten (75cl) bottles of wine, and I will check that you have 10 bottles on the day. The cost will be £78 per punt (which includes punt hire, a large deposit - £50 - for the punt which you will get back if we don't break anything, and a small amount towards the prize fund). Hence the total is £13 per person, assuming you have a crew of 6 (which I strongly advise you do, 10 bottles between 6 is quite enough as it is), of which about £7 should be returned, depending on what damage has been done to the punts. Although inevitably there may be some loss of deposit, we trust you not to sink any punts or break any punt poles.

The organisers strongly recommend you bring along bottles of water to drink, bread/crisps etc to eat (to soak up some wine and appease the ducks for invading their river), sun block and hats (due to punting in the middle of the day).

So please find yourself a crew and get back to me asap!! If you can't find a full crew but would like to take part, please send me an email and I will find you a space in someone else's crew.
