Fandom overload...

Aug 31, 2005 15:35

I have way too many fandoms*. That's not necessarily a bad thing. It fits my 'jack-of-all-trades master-of-a-few' personality. Sometimes it's tough to manage and keep up with them all, especially in the contect of a massive con.

* I use the word 'fandom' like the word 'genre', but with the connotation of extreme interest

You like Kenshin? Really? I never would have guessed!

Oh come on, he has a background based on it.

Hence the sarcasm.

HAHAHA :) (yeah, I caught the sarcasm the first time through :) )

I see Kenshin as a good example of a recovering sinner. Haunted a little by the past yet found a new life and a new way. The cross-shaped scar adds to the symbology (not to mention the Christian arc in the anime series).

I wasn't quite certain what to make of the "Christian" arc of the series. On the one hand, the group is fairly heretical and cultic (the show explains this in part because the group was forced underground). On the other hand, overt religion on the part of important characters (even buddhist and shinto practice), is so rare in anime that one almost has to welcome it when one sees it.

(It should be noted that I don't consider things such as the occasional prayer for ancestors or whatnot to be "overt". I'm thinking of people actually making moral/ethical decisions, even if they're wrong, based on religious belief. Of course, you rarely see that done in American media either--and almost never done well ...)

However, Wolfwood by himself makes Trigun worth watching.

Exactly! Even the mention of the Meiji treatment of Christians in passing is something that blew me away. Akin to having an Ainu (well, not really, but close enough) as a main character in Princess Mononoke...

I have issues with the arc, granted. I tend to find the positive in things, seeing the fingerprints of God in all things, even if they are slightly twisted by the world.

You know, I've not watched Trigun, but I have it in my Netflix queue :)

Oh, you *have* to watch Trigun! It's a moral imperative! ;)

Both Vash and Wolfwood are very moral characters overall, but they have different ways of doing things. And Wolfwood's cross-- just wow. =)
