This weekend, I experienced the wonder that is "Hero" (Ying xiong), a movie directed by Yimou Zhang and starring Jet Li and others. While it is primarily a martial arts film, I was mesmerized by the multiple layers of context and content: color, elements, nature, geometry, seasons, sound, people, dialogue, texture, motion, etc. . Some people are turned off by the 'pulley-wire' Kung-Fu. I find it all part of an elaborate 'dance'. Such martial arts are not meant to be watched for the fight, but for the aesthetic. I only wish I understood the Chinese language better...
