A Rant From a Fanfiction Aficionado.
I read fanfiction.
I write fanfiction.
I love fanfiction.
I read from multiple fandoms--Glee, Harry Potter, Twilight, and Supernatural.I write for the same fandoms.
I enjoy crossovers. I love crossovers. I love to read them. I love to write them. Finding out ways to interweave two series together in ways no one would have thought possible is something I like to do. I think I'm fairly good at it, but that's for my readers to say.
I like lots of pairings. I do have an OTP in each fandom, but I also like to play around. I prefer reading Harry with Viktor, Blaise, Severus, or Cedric (because I love Goblet of Fire AU's) but I will read Harry with almost any male HP character--even those you may not think work. I prefer Kurt/Puck, but I will read Kurt with almost any male character with the exception of Blaine (that's for another rant, however.) Twilight, which I've only recently gotten back into after a 3 year hiatus is a little trickier. Mostly because there seems to be a ridiculous amount of awful--awful--writing out there for the fandom. Mostly I like reading Bella with a werewolf. I'm not too picky on which. Paul seems to be my favorite at the moment.
That being said, I have one pet peeve.
CHARACTER BASHING. I understand people don't care for some characters. That's fine. I understand. I have characters I hate (Uh, Ginny Weasley, Hermione Granger anyone??). The point is hate a character that's fine, but if you base your entire plot around a character bashing that is often times such a caricature that the only thing that is remotely similar to actual characterization is their name, the only thing you're proving is that you're lazy.
LAZY.
Case in point: I'm writing a paper on Twilight for my Juvenile lit. class. I had to reread the series to do so, so I've gotten back into the fandom just a bit. I enjoy reading New Moon AU's where a werewolf imprints on Bella. What I would like to read is a fanfic that has Bella imprinted with a wolf without character bashing--specifically I want a fanfic where Edward comes back (like he says he was about to do in New Moon) that does not involve bashing. Angst, yes, but no bashing. How come every story I find that makes it seem like it might fit my parameters ends up with MAJOR Cullen bashing. I mean, like bashing where the Cullens are attempting to brainwash Bella using their vampiric influence. This has happened not just once but like THREE times this week. I'm beginning to think I am going to have to write my own to get this. I enjoy most of the Twilight characters. I would like to see them interact with this obstacle in place. How hard is that to do?
I'll be surprised if anyone actually read this, but I've just had enough.
STOP THE BASHING.
