CHAPTER 9:

Jun felt worried.

The night before, when he was chatting with his soulmate, he felt the fear of the other person. Maybe he was afraid of being rejected.

This afternoon, the usual art show did not happen.

Jun gazed at the nicely wrapped bandage. He recalled how careful and graceful Ohno’s hands were while he tended to his (actually very minor) wound. It was the same level of dedication and precision when he makes coffee.

He looked at the farthest end of the shop, the dark corner where Ohno’s drawings were. It was a waste that he did not display those paintings around the shop. They were wonderful in Jun’s opinion. He frowned.

“What’s wrong, Matsumoto-kun?” Sho said. Jun glanced at his friend, who was doing his best not to look at his newspaper. Sho was also forcing himself to drink the overly sweet coffee that he ordered. Bits of whipped cream were still on his chin.

“Well… well…”

“Are you upset about that mug?”

Jun nodded. He looked at his own personalized cup. “Ohno-san clearly loved that mug. He did not want to sell that one to me.”

“Oh, I see.”

“I guess he’s upset about what happened. He went home earlier.”

Sho placed a hand under his chin and nodded. “Seems so.”

Jun sighed. He called Chika and informed him that he would be taking the cup home. The assistant placed the cup in a box and gave it back to Jun.

“Aren’t you coming?” he asked Sho, who seems to be looking at the table on the opposite side.

“Ah, yes.” Jun noticed that Sho glanced towards the table bathed in sunlight. He could not really see the person sitting there (it was too bright) but he knew very well that it was Ohno’s friend.

“You know, Sakurai-kun, try and approach that guy if you really like him,” Jun said.

“But…” Sho looked (or tried to look) offended. “How… what makes you say so?”

“Seriously. You look pathetic staring at him,” Jun added. They both looked at the man who was busy answering a questionnaire of some sort. “He’s good-looking. There’s nothing wrong about that.”

Sho gave a small apologetic bow to Jun. “I can’t.”

“I’ll cover for you, okay?” Jun said with a friendly pat on the shoulder before he left the café.

While he was waiting for a cab, Jun realized what he had said earlier. “I look pathetic, I just realized that,” he whispered to himself, smiling stupidly.

He hailed a cab, got in, and pulled out his fountain pen. It was now or never. He wrote the message on his forearm, above the bandage, asking Satoshi to meet him. Jun felt hopeless when after a couple of minutes, no response came.

Jun was about to go down from the taxi when he felt that familiar warm sensation.

“Rain Café, 11 PM.”
