Random Thoughts about Namie Amuro

Next month, I'm finally going to watch my most favorite artist (yes, I have one). After 8 years of just dreaming of waving the towel while jumping (the towel is the "glowstick" of Namie's concerts. Glowsticks are not allowed because she's cool and shit.)

Anyone in the Jpop world will probably know her name: NAMIE AMURO.

I really like this woman because she is a resilient figure. She was actually an idol in her earlier years (without the bikini stuff. I saw a photoshoot with her wearing a one-piece swimsuit and that was the most skin I saw from her), hada  shotgun marriage, became a single mom, fell down, and rose like a phoenix. If she did not go with the flow or with the "in", her 20th anniversary concert would have been a small one. I think that's what is amazing about her: the ability to blend in and also stand out.

It would be an advatnage that she was actually a legend but when you're gone, you're gone - no one cares if you were a goddess before. But Namie restoring her goddess status is an amazing story. With her intense passion to just continue performing, it was a good thing that her agency (she now left Rising Pro) let her do whatever the hell she wants until she slowly gained momentum and became a queen.

I probably have one of the weirdest stories on how I met Namie (when our NA group asked that question, my answer garnered an amused audience. It was really "THAT" weird). By 2008, I was already a fan of Arashi. I chanced upon this fan fiction (it was actually in LJ but I saw that the available copy is in that forum. Still, in my standards, the fan fiction was actually off because 1) I was not interested in Yama Pair or in Sho or in Ohno at that point in time, 2) I didn't really read one-shots. I half-thank Sho and Ohno for this lol.

It was probably fate that made me read that story. The thing was, the last sentence of the fan fiction contained "mini-skirt" and "stilletos". Who is Namie Amuro who wears those stuff? Is the song really that viral? I searched the internet to find out. So basically, my first Namie song was "WHAT A FEELING"... coupled by "NEW LOOK" and "ROCK STEADY". I like cool girls and there's something in her aura that was mysterious. I also chanced upon her "PLAY" tour and that one really pulled me into her fandom. I became an instant Namie fan. I also found that her old TK-era songs were just as wonderful. No wonder those stuff were million sellers.

From RnB, "hip pop" (seriously, it's only her and Sho who uses that term in Jpop and I don't really know how to categorize songs into this category), transition pop, and now EDM (considering that I don't listen to EDM), I am very glad to say that I'm still an Amuraa. I'll probably be an Amuraa until the girl just stops performing because she's in a wheelchair or something.

I might cry when I see her in Hong Kong. I'll let you know about it.

personal, namie amuro
