I have been volunteering, a couple days a week, at a place called ReliaTech. It is affiliated with the school I have been going to. I have been refurbishing old discarded computers, this is excellent experience and fun. Today I installed a wireless card, uninstalled and reinstalled a hard drive, switched memory sticks, installed a DVI card and then took it back out again all to try to make a computer work, no go. So then after due consideration the Cliff the refurbishing manager told me to salvage it. That means take everything except the mother board and CPU out of the case and put the case in the recycling pile and put the components away. We have shelves full of any component you could want, some of it new. The only thing we are short of is power supplies so if a computer needs one it most likely gets salvaged. While I was doing this I was also installing Windows XP pro. in another computer along with AVG, Adobe, Acrobat, Skype, internet drivers, video drivers, and Windows updates, I only stayed 4 hours, one of the reasons I left is my feet hurt, I'm not used to standing for long periods time. The last job I had where I had stand to do it was more than 20 years ago.
This shop/repair shop/refurbishing place has been around for several years. The computers they refurbish are sold at a low cost or given away to: low income families, Boys and Girls Club locations, the YMCA, etc. The ones given away have corporate sponsors helping with the cost .
