My contribution to energy expenditure

(1) As instructed by media propaganda, at 8 PM I turned off all lights and unplugged my computer and stereo etc. Then, since the apartment was dark, and the weather was warm (in the 50s), I decided to take a walk. During the walk I triggered four automatic porch lights as I passed near them. I don't know the wattage of the lights, or how long they stayed on after I passed, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if in their time on they used more energy than I would have if I'd spent the hour at home sitting at my computer.

(2) Yesterday, I received an email with the subject line "Love In A Jockstrap," and I didn't realize until I opened it that it was spam. I'd assumed it was promo copy from some music publicist. I'm not saying that Love In A Jockstrap would be a good band name, since it isn't, but it's a plausible one, and many current bands have worse.

(3) It turns out that the fellow at the Las Vegas Weekly who was told to tell me to hold off sending any more columns was himself laid off a few days later. So both people I worked with are gone. The woman who's now running the Website told me that all the "blogs" (evidently they were categorizing my column as a blog) are being put on hold as the LVW Website "gears up for the relaunch." And "blogs on the new site will be functioning somewhat differently, and we're still in the process of deciding the best way to move forward with them." She hopes the decisions will be made by the end of April. So my column wasn't put to sleep for its content. But my guess is that the two guys who are no longer there were the only ones who even knew what the content was. I'm not optimistic, and anyway I can't really wait for them to decide, but it's nice to know that I wasn't singled out.

las vegas weekly, energy, spam
