Not remotely ready with my list, and faithful readers will note that I still haven't posted my list for 2018 either. But here we are, 2019, 82 or so, needs to be reordered, many more will be added and some of these will drop off. I'm trying to keep up with Cameroonian hip-hop and Korean pop and I'm six months behind with each. I checked the ILM Read more... )

I second most of your yays, although am surprised to not like the Miranda more - well I do like most of it, track by track, but the meh ones somehow seem like bigger potholes than they should? I mean I didn't like "Tin Man" etc., but those didn't interfere w overall momentum of their surrounding albums. Then again have only listened to Wildcard once, though previously that's all she needed. Oh well will try again, also looking fwd to Kalie Shorr next up tonight.

What did you not like about Sheryl Crow, Lillie Mae? Would have thought those were right up yr alley.

Hey Don - Biggest Miranda potholes for me have been "Settling Down" (which a couple people tell me I'm underrating - may need to force-feed it more), "Holy Water," "Locomotive" (token generic obligatory loud train metaphor going nowhere), especially "How Dare You Love" (which nobody I've talked to likes) and maybe "Fire Escape."

Crow album is at least twice as long as it should be, just a real chore to get through, one of those duet-studded extravaganza albums loaded to the gills with duet partners I don't care about in the first place who don't give me much reason here to care in the second place. With any luck, it'll get nominated for a Grammy. Lillile Mae album I forget - it's been a few weeks. But I think I was having trouble remembering much off it then, too. Just struck me as the kind of roots drabness that Jack White falls for way easier than I do, I think. (It's on his label.)

The bottom couple yays - Brittany Howard and Lana Del Rey - were really marginal. Had moments of spark and ambition, but I dislike more than I like on both of those albums. (B- and C+, respectively.)

Yeah, so far seeming like Miranda is explicitly overstating what was implicit, on prev solo albums and w Pistol Annies re self-determination and getting some fun and other satisfactions out of life - like she's suddenly trying too hard?

Oh, before I forget: saw a show preview and backstory on Gary Allan, who's playing near here soon, and not a dive or county fair, but a fairly plush venue - seems that he's been concentrating on making most of his money on the road for quite a while, as most do, but also has nearly finished an album.

Finally listened to the Kalie Shorr, and just posted this on Rolling Country:OMG Yall, if you, like me and some upthread, are so far hearing Maren Morris's Girl as pretty good but kind of disappointing as a follow-up to Hero, or not, better check Kalie Shorr's Open Book-comparison junkies of Rolling Stone are wrong to cite Shania, but yes ok Taylor and Alanis (at their best) do pertain at times. But it is country enough re neurosis and honed lines and twang pangs x (pop country) big boot beats at their right moments and li'l wave rows of programming at others and droney concise electric chords and that's all about Shorr 'til I've listened more, hardly daring to believe it's really this good but pretty sure.
