I dremt the final scene of Sternberg's silent classic The Last Command, where the broken-down bit actor, his mind slipping, briefly and convincingly starts behaving as his former self, a great general. But in my dream version, the movie is in brilliant technicolor and directed by Vincente Minnelli. This last scene becomes a directorial tour de force in which Minnelli has Jannings, as the demented player, pull back a little of the velvet curtain separating one film production from another, disappear on the other side of the curtain onto a neighboring soundstage, return to view in a toga with four Roman legionnaires in tow, under his leadership, and then proceed to march from one soundstage to another, taking command of each movie set as he comes to it - a kind of critical commentary on each, the movie implies, but unfortunately the dream is getting vague on this, as to what sets are being taken over (think there was a scenic mountain lake, but the dream doesn't specify the further sets, or visualize them), since I'm beginning to wake up.
