My Pazz & Jop Ballot, 2009

Dec 24, 2009 22:50

Here's my Pazz & Jop ballot. My opinion is that the year doesn't actually end until December 31st, so that's when I'll start posting expanded lists, possibly with the order changed at the top. The two near misses on my albums list, by the way, were Demi Lovato and Keri Hilson; having four ace songs and lots of personality wasn't quite enough to get ( Read more... )

Does whoever organises the P&J ballot hate Britain, or something? I didn't get a ballot again.

It's Rob Harvilla who does it. Would he even know you are British? Seems to me that though the poll mainly uses North Americans they have no policy against other countries. At any rate, they didn't when Chuck and Bob were running it. Chuck invited Tim Finney in back in the early '00s, as I recall.

But the deadline was three hours ago!

(Happy Wobs, by the way.)

I'm listening to "Soldier Of Love" right now. Is it this year or next? (Well, obviously we can count it next year if we want.) Also, have your heard Mavado's "Till She Bawl"? That's what I was listening to right before "Soldier." I like it more than anything on Mr. Brooks. Some more dancehall for my list.

I've seen a few other non-USians submit ballots...

I emailed him last year, no reply, not gonna chase, his (and its) loss. I haven't heard that Mavado track! Dancehall artists KEEP MAKING MUSIC NON-STOP AARGH (and also HURRAH).

Very much tempted to lob "Soldier Of Love" in as my No 1 of this year.

I've heard all but two of the singles (Corb Lund and Ray Fever). I've only heard one of the albums (Lily Allen).

If it's the Phil Kline I think it is who did John the Ascender (and I'm pretty sure it would be, with his tape loops and all), he was a friend of mine back in my New York days.

Oh yeah, I did hear the single by Ms. Fever, which came through on the Singles Jukebox, though I didn't review it. It took me a while to admit liking it, since I officially find her vocals puzzling and grating.

Is the song's title "A Game In Town Like This"? I'm checking Lund on YouTube, and that's the one with the line "Losin' Lately Gambler."

(Ah, here is the same song, but this time they refer to it as the title track, the album being called Losin' Lately Gambler. Maybe the song went under both titles, and ended up as "A Game In Town Like This.")

Affinity of 3 anonymous January 2 2010, 22:26:16 UTC
Hi Frank! We have an affinity of three--"I'm on a Boat," K'Naan, and Paisley. Curiously enough, I think that's the same affinity I have with Xhuxk's list, though there may be another single we both like, I forget. I'll go try to draw some specious conclusions about nice-guy rap and country fans also digging novelty singles.

(I should really listen to some of your other albums. Do you stream most of what you hear?)

I only listened to the Paisley 'cause Xhuxk was on it (I'd previously found Paisley boringly pleasant, though I had retained fond memories of that old single where he always answers "Me neither." ("You wanna dance?" [Pause] "Me neither.") I listened to "I'm On A Boat" because of Dave (and maybe Xhuxk listened to it because of me); I heard the K'naan single "ABC's" by accident when the record company was promoting it as its single of the week on its YouTube site which I was visiting going after some other track. But I finally got back to the album because Xhuxk and Xgau had praised it.

Xhuxk turned me on to K'Naan and "I'm On a Boat", via different internet sites (and unbeknownst to him). In my P/J comments I recommended that they include everybody's gatekeeper for every song and album. I don't know what that'd tell us about the biz, but it'd be interesting if nothing else.

"Me Neither" IS good; I like Paisley's ballads too, but then I'm a sap who voted for "Then". I'm not sure if he writes with as much specificity as Taylor, but "If I Could Write a Letter To Me," for instance, has lots of clever plays on the phrase that always seem unexpected. His tunes usually make me smile, except that boring "Whiskey Lullaby," which I tend to phase out as soon as I hear it.

frank,

just met my new class of intro to philosophy students for the first day, and as always threw in my favorite-records survey.

results: 4 / 25 listed taylor swift, 'fearless', when asked to list '3 favorite records'.

seems to be the newest and one of the most consistent results i've gotten (in other years, sometimes the winner was a nirvana record, weezer record, maybe the beatles).

two or three mentions this semester: lil wayne.

Which philosophers are you assigning this semester? Also, how do you go about getting them to do the reading? My friend David, who teaches philosophy at Metro State, says that's the single hardest thing, to get the students to read the assignments. Even pop quizzes don't do the trick.

He and I both have the same favorite album (Raw Power by the Stooges).

Has there ever been a survey of philosophy teachers' favorite music?

same intro course i've done a few times now, plato / descartes / nietzsche / wittgenstein. i once threw in aristotle, then switched to sextus empiricus (the pyrrhonian skeptic), but i think in the spring term i might try montaigne in that slot. (similar ideas, but students find sextus very hard to read ( ... )

Yes, it is the same Timothy Gould, though I'd never heard of him until I read your post. The MSCD philosophy department has 12 faculty members and 34 adjuncts, which tells you how the world and the economy are going, I guess. But, yeah, "voice" is something I should explore, and a quick look through Google makes him definitely seem interesting. Does he have a blog? (I tend not to have the chutzpah to introduce myself to strangers, unless they're sitting next to me at St. Mark's Coffeehouse holding philosophy books.)

I haven't read your Wittgenstein paper yet, but it's nearing the top of my pile, now that all my lists are done.

When I audited David's course a year ago - it was Intro - he did Plato, Augustine, Descartes, Kant, and Nietzsche. I'm glad you're letting the 20th century into your course.

I've always wanted to read Montaigne. What do you consider a good translation?
