That WOULD explain why they're so mixed together to begin with. And you're right about separation of church and state being embraced and ignored at the same time. I STILL can't believe the gall of congressmen trying to write an imposition of religious beliefs into the constitution. And I don't even label myself liberal.

Why does the state have an interest in marriage? To protect individuals and society. Both people and society are harmed when spouses are ditched or when children are abandoned.
