Where all my time has gone lately:

Are you Angry about Heritage of Pride’s cancellation of our community's Street Festival and celebration, PrideFest, this year?

Top 3 things you need to know about the cancellation of PrideFest:

1. Heritage of Pride (HOP) is charged with serving the community through PrideFest. More than 300,000 celebrants expected PrideFest and now have nowhere to go. This could have been easily avoided by holding the event at the traditional location in the West Village.
2. The Village, home to the Stonewall Rebellion, has historically been welcoming for the queer community in all of its diversity. HOP referred to our familiar stomping ground as a “dark, dank closet.” What an offensive and infuriating, and inaccurate attitude!
3. HOP’s gender-segregated, $55, age 18+ Pier dances can accommodate only 2,500 people (1% of last year’s PrideFest attendance). This is an outrageous and elitist exclusion of the majority of us. Result: no party for everyone else.

A tiny segment of our community claims to represent all queers. In reality, what they are really doing is erasing our voices and our community. What is their purpose? To build a less-threatening, whitewashed community? Attempting to control and censor how we celebrate is as disgusting and unacceptable as the cold and coded bigotry of straight society.

Why do we care?
We are the Queer Justice League! We are activists dedicated to challenging oppression in all its forms through direct action and coalition building across the queer community. We are people of all gender and sexual identities working to build a radical queer planet. We stand opposed to any actions and policies that challenge that vision.

The Queer Justice League: Where queer super powers fight for social equality and justice!

QJL will not submit to the self-hating and anti-freedom mindset that has resulted in the loss of Pridefest. All queers are super Heroes with the power to bring about change! We look forward to a PrideFest next year which is built on and celebrates the joyful diversity of us all.

QJL IS: QUEER LOVE, QUEER JUSTICE, QUEER VISIBILITY, QUEER SOLIDARITY, KEEPING IT LOCAL, THINKING GLOBAL, DIRECT ACTION, ACTIVISM, ACTING-UP, HEALTHCARE REFORM, PRISON REFORM, POLITICAL WATCHDOGGING, GUERILLA POLITICAL THEATRE, SUSTAINABLE CHANGE, VIABILITY, BLASTING AWAY IGNORANCE AND THE THREATS TO OUR VERY EXISTENCE.

Join us for a brief rally at the end of the parade near 7th Ave. and Christopher Street.

Queer Justice League meetings are Thursdays at 8 pm in the LGBT Community Center located on 13th St just west of 7th Ave.
