Book Title: "Tsugumi"
Author: Banana Yoshimoto

First Published: 1989
Rating: superfunk - golden - sweet - blah - superblah- blergh - goatfood

While it lacked the novelty of Yoshimoto's sparse, warm writing for me, I think that I liked the story better than all the others I read so far. Tsugumi is a young girl who is physically very sick and weak, but mentally fiercely strong. The story is narrated by her cousin, who spends one last summer at the inn Tsugumi's parents own, and where she grew up. She describes Tsugumi as a person who makes you infinitely mad, but you can't help but love. Everything is permeated by the nostalgia, the melancholy that  a summer like this will never happen again. My only gripe is, once again, with the translation. It's very good, I don't doubt that, but all the footnotes! PUT THEM IN THE BACK! Seriously. If you feel the need to explain "sushi" to german readers, don't interrupt the narration with it.
