Christians protest mosque.
From the article:
"'Jesus hates Muslims,' they screamed at worshippers arriving at the Masjid An-Noor mosque to prepare for the holy week of Ramadan. One protester shoved a placard at a group of young children leaving the mosque. 'Murderers,' he shouted."
Emphasis mine.
Muslims died that day too. (And yes, that means people in the building, not on the planes.) Muslims live and work in the city. Heck, most of the food carts those protestors are eating off of are Halal places run by very hardworking Muslims. Do they not deserve to practice their religion because someone evil shared a twisted version of it?
Think about this. And honestly, don't just throw out an answer. Imagine a YMCA bought that abandoned, empty building to create a community center to help revitalize the WTC area. Would you have such a strong reaction to it? Would you claim it was a middle finger to the people that died there? Or would you take them at their face value if they claimed they just wanted to help the area and their community? (Don't forget, the YMCA is the Young Men's Christian Association)
This group is basically doing the same thing. A religious but community oriented center. Hell, they're headed in part by the Cordoba Initiative, a group with the stated mission of improving east-west relations.
If anything such a building is a monument to the people in that building, because it proves we are a more tolerant, more diverse people than the hijackers of those planes could ever understand. We are better than them, and we won't let their evil actions divide us.
