United Russia Loses Yet Another Election
To say that United Russia is on a losing streak is an understatement as serious as saying that Greece’s finances are “less than ideal:” it’s technically true, but it does nothing to capture the supreme gravity and importance of what is going on. The party of power, or if you prefer Alexey Navalny’s formulation the “party of swindlers and thieves,” was just crushed in the second round of the Togliatti mayoral election, its candidate going down to defeat by a truly humiliating margin of 17%. The election was, by all accounts, a relatively clean one and I think it’s quite telling that United Russia was whipped so thoroughly, particularly in a city in which Vladimir Putin himself remains genuinely popular.
