In this post I discuss the leaked copy of the final Harry Potter book (the Carpet Leak - which I have not yet read!) I am talking ABOUT the BIGGEST SPOIL OF THE CENTURY but not the content itself - if that makes sense :)
I have seen the posts about the leaked copy of DH on the Internet but didn't place much reliance on it. There are a lot of retarded people around who think it's fun to hoodwink others. The thing is last night, I saw a post from a Credible Source on my friends list who has seen a copy of the leaked file. I downloaded a copy of said file and I am almost 100% it's real.
Just look at the headlines at google news if you search for
harry potter, leaked.
There's a post in the
Salon blog where someone's got an image and they describe it better than I can:
Four days before it hits bookstores, I've got a copy of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." I downloaded it from a link posted at the Bittorrent file-sharing site the Pirate Bay.
But hold on. It's not as sweet as it sounds. What I've got is not really the book but a series of photographs of the book -- someone has meticulously snapped shots of each page. Some who've discussed leaked copies say that they've seen only Pages 1 through 495. But the copy I have includes all the pages; I could, if I wanted to, tell you the very last line of the very last Harry Potter book right now.
Here is an image, I have photoshopped out all text from page one:
1. Whose hand is that? Did it get sore? It's a very long book. We shall call it The Hand That Spoiled the Fans
2. Will Rowling's lawyers be using the latest Hand Recognition Technology to hunt down the owner of the hand because he/she/it is either the perpetrator of the Biggest Spoil of the Century - or an Accessory of the Biggest Spoil of the Century
3. Does this person have a job? How long did it take to photograph each page?
4. How did this person get the book first?
5. Did this person read the book or just decide to leak it?
And my main question is:
6. Is this leakage going to prompt Rowling and her publisher to officially release the book early? I have a vague recollection of certain trailers being formally released online simply because fans were doing cam jobs.
As to me? I flicked to the last chapter of the book and peeked in there (because I am evil), I have also read all of DM's liveblogging posts but:
1. While I can read word onscreen and also internet browsers, I don't really like clicking in the Acrobat reader page per page
2. The Spoiler and his/her/its omniprescent hand sometimes photographed the book lopsided and I would feel like I was watching a cam job :D
So I have a mild dilemma now about whether to read the illicit goods or not. I think I shall wait simply because it's still during the week and I want the weekend to be able to read and savour the goodies.
update #1: I am howling with laughter over one headline which goes:
"Super-Uber-Spoiler: Quick Summary Of Who Dies"
When I clicked on the link it had extracts of the relevant paragraphs encapsulating the fate of certain Dead people and the fate of certain ships. People are so funny sometimes. Do you think there is a Party Pooper gene? :)
update #2: If this was a movie, they'd able to track down the perp on the basis of that really ugly carpet against which the book was photographed!!! The Perp would be clapped in irons forever - forced to read only Dan Brown books for the term of his/her natural life ... O the pain.
update #3: I definitely don't want to see that hand and that carpet for 795 pages
