I went to see this film last year with my Modern History class. I, like you, found it rather depressing and horrible in parts, yet I couldn't help but be drawn to the beautiful imagery of Ireland and the characters that were portrayed brilliantly by the actors. Cillian Murphy was exceptional. There were parts during the film that I was confused about because I guess I haven't really researched much about the tensions and civil war between Britain and Ireland. I think I WOULD see it again, perhaps to refresh my memory and gain a better understanding of the historical aspects. =)

Speaking of war and the British, have you ever seen Empire of the Sun (that stars a young Christian Bale)? That film is absolutely brilliant, and is one of my favourites. It's basically about a young British boy named Jim who lives with his parents in Shanghai. When the Japanese invade the country and tear the city apart, Jim is separated from his parents and ends up at a Japanese internment camp. If you haven't seen it, you

I might post it to Papa Koala for him to watch because I don't think I can watch it again. It's too sad! When the youth Chris is shot as a traitor and then the ending? *cries* Too, too tragic.
As to Empire of the Sun! I have indeed watched it, see here. It's probably semi-compulsory viewing for any foreigner in China and most foreigners who have been to Shanghai will usually watch it as well. Christian Bale was soooo wee :D He's come a long way he has.
