Appropriate that I use the

I've had to update my
Ships I have Loved post with three new ones. :) Henry Fitzroy/Vicki Nelson from
Blood Ties,
Tim Riggins/Lyla Garrity from
Friday Night Lights and also *gasp* a new non-canon, wrong!ship of the loneliest,

I haven't actually watched all/any of the episodes of this show because of my bandwidth limitations but I just wanted to say that all those Riggins clips you posted onto youtube have converted me into thinking long hair and an obsession with american football (to the point where it's likely one of the few possible topics of conversation) can be kind of attractive in a man/er...17 year old high school student. *feels decrepit and lecherous* Anyway, kudos to your insistence and the quality of the show (what little I've seen of it anyway) and the fine broodiness of Taylor Kitsch because those were thoughts I never expected to entertain. So yes, with that in mind, and with practically no exposure to Matt/Julie (although the Powderpuff game interaction was adorable), I will sporadically have your back on this ship! *puts on sunsmart paper hat and proceeds to splash you with my paddle as I try unsuccessfully to steer. Or even get the oar to skim smoothly through the water*
However, I think my true love would have to be Riggins/Hard-won Football Scholarship, because that would enable him to get the hell out of the town and not end up as one of the high school team's past glory players who get trotted out with farcical ceremony every couple of years for the town to nostalgically reminisce over, but also pity. Your explanation that he's just had horrible luck with relationships of all sorts kind of makes me want something to go really right for him. *is such a sap*

Just thought of something that could be a bit weird in the fic: Julie's only 15 as a character, right? It's really hard to tell because she acts so mature for her age, going by personal memory of maturity levels at that stage of adolescence, anyway. I don't know why but I get really wigged out about 15 year olds going around having intense relationships and sex and the like, although Tim's only 17 himself. But then, he also seems counterintuitively older given his character position at the start of the series. Perhaps its the sports thing. :P Is Tim older than Matt? Because if they're in the same grade level as Landry helping Tim out with his homework would indicate, I wonder why the minuscule age issue feels strange when the canon relationship follows similar age lines. Perhaps it's because Matt's such a cheek-pinch-y, lovable innocent.
...says the girl who hasn't seen a full episode yet. *headdesk*

I think you must have mentioned that in your post about the episode and that's how I remembered Julie's age. 15 is definitely a questionable time to be thinking about sex. Although admittedly, it's applicable to a few of my friends. :-/
You know, it's really odd how a lot of American television shows targeted at, or depicting, teenagers have their characters engage in serious relationships at such young ages. Obviously it serves a practical plot purpose because I'd imagine a realistic portrayal of college would disperse the characters all across the country, but it's strange looking back now at Buffy, say, and realising that she was probably 15/6 during the first season. And even Buffy's sexual progression as a character would be considered measured by today's standards (only mentioning, and then having, sex with Angel in the 2nd season), I presume to keep today's shows more in line with reality where a lot of teenagers are becoming rather er, sexually active at a younger age. It's a phenomenon I know, but until I see characters that have been developed really well enough for me to have some emotional response to them discuss the issue, it doesn't register how externally savvy and yet so young most teenagers are.

Exactly. I don't tend to like pairings when people are overly young because those tend to be the puppy love / not forever pairings and in my fictional fantasy world - I like OTPs built on enduring that last through everything. The pairing of a 15/16 year old is not likely to make it through highschool let alone life's adversities and there's also the potential for the relationship to get kind of boring really fast. For me, part of the reason Jason/Lyla didn't really appeal to me was that at the age of 17, they already seemed to be like a married couple and there wasn't a great deal of excitement and sparkage there. If they were like that at 17, give them another 30 years together and it's probably going to be very boring and monotonous.

It troubles me a lot because even though people are always talking about splitting fantasy from reality and saying that this is fantasy etc, the fact is that kids do mimic what what they see on television. We see them pairing up younger and younger in real life and I am sure that a lot of it is because of their exposure to media. When I was a kid, I think I really was a kid, but these days a kid is like a little adult who hasn't got all of his or her rights yet.
I worry about the age of consent dropping too much and children losing even more of their childhood. As children grow more savvy, the argument will be that they have the ability to decide earlier about things and I'm not sure that that's a good thing. It then casts all kinds of shadowy grey areas for things like paedophilia and that sort of thing. I realise I'm overthinking the issue given that this is just a television show but I do worry about that sort of stuff. I'm kind of horrified by the sort of stuff people have access to on the Internet. I'm not talking about porn, I'm talking about lj coms and fan fic. There are kids who have complete and free access to some of the most explicit, violent and adult fan fic around and that's got to affect their thinking/development in some way.
Sorry, I'm waffling again :P Point is, I'd never want to read or write fic about Julie as a 15 year old if it involved sex.
