World Trade Center, The Painted Veil, pancakes and shopping

Flyby post ...

World Trade Center was a good movie - very sad but also very inspirational. To be honest, although the stories of Port Authority policemen John McLoughlin (Nicolas Cage) and Will Jimeno (Michael Peña) was interesting, I was much more interested in the stories of the rescue workers that went in to get them out - they were amazingly selfless.

Also, I almost imploded with joy. I didn't realise that they had made a movie of the W. Somerset Maugham The Painted Veil which was the story of a woman named Kitty who marries a doctor named Walter Fane. It's a loveless marriage and she has an affair with Charles Townsend, assistant colonial secretary of Hong Kong. When Walter discovers the relationship, he forces Kitty to accompany him to a cholera-infested region of mainland China .... It's a fascinating story and the movie stars Edward Norton and Aussie actress Naomi Watts. The trailer is here and looks fabulous.

Interesting how they use the music from The Last Samurai for the trailer.

In other news, this morning I tried to sneak down the hall to make coffee without waking Stephen up but as you will see from the photos from before here, the corridor is long. It's also creaky so as I crept past, I saw that I had already woken him up :D

We're going to go off to Steak & Eggs so that I can see if I can find pancakes (looks hopeful), then Singapore Girl will join us and we'll go to Beijing's 'Silicon Valley' (not) ie. Zhong Guan Cun to buy loads of computer equipment since Stephen will be doing all sorts of very exciting things to my computers. Yes, I now appear to have three computers. Hmmm.

Anyway, then it will be tomato and egg dumplings. Yay. :D We will be joined by Singapore Girl if she can wake up :D
