Elisabeth: a musical based on the life of Elisabeth, Empress of Austria
Elisabeth, Empress of Austria, was born in 1837 and died in 1898. Her assassination by the Italian anarchist Luigi Lucheni was a crime heavy with symbolism, auguring the end of a cultural millennium.
'kay the other day it was
Someone Like You sung by Sonya from the Korean version of Jekyll and Hyde. My fellow youtube and
musicals addict
mbs_bookworm (particularly musicals in many languages) just let me know about a song for which I have been searching! Yay me! Yay her! :)
I occasionally post about the very heavy-going but exceedingly awesome musical
Elisabeth. The complete synopsis to the musical is
here There are Austrian, Hungarian, Dutch and German versions of the musical.
Back in August, I posted a few youtube clips of Die Schatten werden länger ("The Shadows Grow Longer"), being a duet between Crown Prince Rudolf and Death (the personification of Death) over at
this post. The interpretations were much more eerie and homo-erotic than I imagined in my head.
lucie_p was kind enough to correct my German translation because my German deeply sucketh and is probably the worst of all my languages :P *sigh*
Anyway, the 1992 Vienna version is
here and a live version in German is
here.
The song I was looking for was
Schepen In De Nacht (Ships in the Night) in Dutch because Boote in der Nacht (German) was a bit hocky for me.
Schepen In De Nacht (Ships in the Night) is a duet right near the end of the musical between Sisi (Elisabeth) and Franz Joseph in which Elisabeth tells him that it is time that they admit that they could never be happy together, because their goals are too different and she is unable to be the person he needs her to be.
Here is the clip for Schepen In De Nacht (Ships in the Night) in Dutch:
This is Boote in der Nacht (German). It's still really beautiful, I just prefer the Dutch for some reason, even though to be honest, Dutch is very hocky sounding as well - sorry
amaliestar. Still wanna meet for dinner tonight? :D
Lyrics in Dutch
Elisabeth:
Liefde is mooi,
maar soms merk je
dat liefde niet voldoet.
Geloof geeft kracht,
maar enkel
geloven is niet goed.
Dat grote wonder,
dat heeft niet mogen zijn.
Onze levens varen tussen
schijn en pijn.
Wij zijn als twee
schepen in de nacht.
Ieder op zijn eigen koers
en met zijn eigen vracht.
Wij passeren elkaar op zee.
Telkens weer
valt afscheid niet mee.
Gelukkig zijn ligt niet
in onze macht.
Franz Josef:
Jij wil het hoogste. maar dat is
een onbereikbaar doel.
Elisabeth: Jouw droom is mij te klein.
Franz Josef:
Dicht bij elkaar in 't donker geeft troost,
naar mijn gevoel.
Elisabeth: Ik wil niet jouw schaduw zijn.
Both:
Kon jij het leven door
mijn ogen ondergaan.
dan zou je eindelijk weer
mijn taal verstaan.
Wij zijn als twee schepen
in de nacht.
Ieder op zijn eigen koers en
met zijn eigen vracht.
Wij passeren elkaar op zee.
Telkens weer
valt afscheid niet mee.
Gelukkig zijn ligt niet
in onze macht.
Elisabeth:
Jij en ik, wij zijn twee schepen
in de nacht.
Franz Josef:
Begrijp toch... ik mis je...
jouw liefde. Kan jij niet
bij me zijn?
Elisabeth:
Ieder op zijn eigen koers en
met zijn eigen vracht.
Franz Josef:
Begrijp toch... ik mis je...
jouw liefde. Alleen zijn
doet zo'n pijn.
Both:
Wij passeren elkaar op zee.
Zo alleen en triest, alletwee.
Gelukkig zijn lag niet
in onze macht.
Franz Josef:
Ik mis je.
Elisabeth:
Begrijp toch, wat niet zijn kan.
kan niet zijn.
This is the English translation of the German version, but I'm assuming that the Dutch should be largely similar.
Intro
Franz Josef: You know why I came?
Sisi: No, but I can guess
Franz Josef:
Come home Sisi,
we belong together
I still believe in that
I love you, and love, the saying goes,
can heal all wounds
Song
Sisi:
Love can do alot,
but sometimes, love is not enough
Faith is strong, but sometimes
it is also self deception
We wanted miracles, but they didn't happen
It is about time that we see things more clearly
We are like two boats in the night
Every boat has its own destination and its own cargo
We meet each other on the ocean,
and then we are sad to part,
but what's left of our rendezvous
isn't for us to decide.
Franz Josef:
You want everything
but sometimes a little can be a lot.
Sisi: Your dream is too small for me
Franz Josef:
To be close in the darkness,
is that not good enough as a goal?
Sisi: I don't want to be your shadow
Both:
Could you only once see through my eyes,
then you wouldn't misunderstand me any longer.
We are like 2 boats in the night
every boat has its own destination
and its own cargo
we meet each other on the ocean and then we're sad to part,
why is happiness so hard to achieve for us?
Sisi: We're like 2 boats in the night...
Franz Josef:
I had you, I love you
Why don't you want to be with me?
Understand me, I need you. I love you
Why are we both alone?
Both:
We meet each other on the ocean
we are more alone than before
why is achieving happiness so hard for us?
Franz Josef: I love you
Sisi: Please, understand, what cannot be cannot be.
Hmmmm, I have warned everyone about how random and strange my disparate interests and obsessions are, right? Run! Run away while you can I tell you!!
