Television Thoughts: Supernatural, episode 14 'Nightmares'

Feb 18, 2006 22:35

My dutiful little bro stopped by tonight. He has been downloading episodes for his poor bandwidth-challenged sister who has maxed out her monthly 10 gig allowance in less than 3 weeks. To be contrasted with him - he has a THREE gig cap and is still fine :) He handed me a memory stick containing episode 14 of Supernatural.

That made me laugh in itself - memory sticks are so little and funky. I can't help thinking back to the little floppy discs that contained 1.4 meg!!! First, 1.4 meg is such a funny number and secondly - I don't think I could have ever guessed back then that I'd be transferring episodes back and forth on a tiny little stick thing :)

Back then if I had a massive document that went over 1.4 meg, I was swearing.

Nightmare, being episode 14 of Supernatural was really good. My love for the Winchester brothers continues to grow. They are so sweet!!!!

Spoilery thoughts

Interesting fake out. When I first saw the freaky son, I thought:"He looks freaky it must be his fault", and then I thought:" But that's so obvious - it has to be something else" :)

What I learnt from this episode:
  • If your brother has just died in a freakish accident, do not stick any part of your body out a window that is acting strange, especially if has been unlocking itself of its own accord and going up and down. I'm just saying. It's as bad as sticking your hand down faulty garbage grates in sinks.

  • There is something very, very wrong about the fact that the Winchester brothers can look hot when they are dressing up as Catholic priests......

  • If there are evil psychotic things around, get rid of all of the knives in your kitchen and replace them with rubber spatulas - the likelihood of being spatula'd to death is low.

  • Always have your mobile phone with you so that if some freaky evil invisible force traps you in your garage and tries to kill you with carbon monoxide, you can call for help!
Parts of this episode were incredibly unsettling. I watch the episodes on my VAIO in the lounge and while I was watching, Mama Koala decided she wanted to watch the news so I plugged in my headphones. When the Freaky Scary Evil Window Possessed by Evil Freaky Pale Max Guy slammed down and exploded the guy's head, I jumped in my seat, made a very loud exclamation of horror and recoiled very violently from the screen. I scared my mother to death who was sitting a short distance away and couldn't figure out what was wrong with me :)

Then during the Max levitating the kitchen knife and about to stab his stepmother's eye, I was covering one half of the computer screen with my left hand ie. I could see Max but couldn't see the knife or his step mother ;)

As usual, I absolutely loved the interaction between the brothers. They care about each other so much. Dean is so protective of his little brother 'Sammy'. He doesn't want to leave him alone to talk to Max - he keeps flatly refusing until Sam finally persuades him, it's just so touching.

I also love the fact that Sam is slowly coming to terms with the fact that what his father did was 'right' even though it meant that he never had a 'normal' childhood. Sam craves normalcy in the way that Buffy or Veronica Mars crave an'ordinary' life. Unfortunately, like them, he is not an ordinary person.

When Sam finds out that Max's mother died in similar circumstances to his mother but that instead of 'believing' like John Winchester did, he turned around and 'blamed' his infant son Max.
Sam: I'll tell you one thing ... we're lucky we had dad
Dean: I never thought I'd hear you say that
Sam: Well, it could have gone a whole other way after mum ..a little more tequila, a little less demon-hunting (wry expression)... then we would have had Max's childhood. All things considered. We turned out ok. Thanks to him
Dean: All things considered.

It all goes back to the old thing of everyone reacts to exactly the same thing in different ways. Some people suffer misfortune and setbacks, blame the world, become cynical, bitter and give up. Others some pick themselves up and do everything in their power to at least go on even if they can't 'fix' things. Admittedly the example here was a bit extreme - both families have a mother killed by an evil demon that pins the poor dying woman to the ceiling while engulfed by flames, one father turns violent and abusive, the other turns demon hunter. Nonetheless, the principle still stands - when something happens, when a decision is made - how do you handle it from there? Where do you take it? Certain things are beyond our control, but how we 'feel' about it and how we 'react' to it are within our control.

I also love the moment when Sam tells Dean that he has discovered that he also has powers of telekinesis.
Dean:Oh. (looks a bit startled) Right.
Sam: Yeah.

Dean Picks up a spoon

Dean: Bend this
Sam: I can't turn it off and off Dean
Dean:Well how'd you do it?
Sam: I don't know. I can't control it. I saw you die and it just came out of me like punch .. you know - like a freak adrenaline thing.
Dean: Well I'm sure it won't happen again.
Sam: Yeah maybe. Aren't you worried man? Aren't you worried that I could turn into Max or something?

Dean: (emphatically) Nope. No way. Know why?

Sam: No. Why? (Sam's got such a hopeful puppy dog look in his eyes - like his big brother's going to be able to tell him something to make everything all right)

Dean: Cause you got one advantage that Max didn't have.

Sam: Dad? Because dad's not here Dean....
Dean: No. Me .... As long as I'm around, nothing bad's gonna happen to you. (gives a reassuring smile)

I loved that. I love that it's totally not true that Dean can protect Sam - he wouldn't have a bloody clue what's going on and whether he can fix things but we all know that he will do everything in his power to protect his little brother. Even die for him. It's like how whenever he thinks Sam's in trouble, he calls him 'Sammy' even though it annoys the hell out of Sam. I'm guessing Dean's like that duck in the water - calm on the top but paddling frantically beneath the surface. He's not going to allow Sam to freak out and get scared so he'll do what it takes to calm his baby brother down. Gah.

Sam's so protective of his big bro, too. Bursting out of the cupboard like that! He'll do anything for his bro as well.

One tiny peeve. A lot of fans are squealing with glee that the spoon bending thing is a pop culture reference to The Matrix. As far as I was aware, Uri Geller was famous for claiming to be able to bend spoons and keys a long time before the Matrix series came along ....

The closer of the episode is an absolute hoot.
Dean: Now then. I know what we need to do about your premonitions. (seriously) I know where we have to go.

Sam: Where? (Sam looks very anxious - he's sooooo cute here. He's a little brother wanting his big brother to tell him what to do :)

Dean: (seriously) Vegas.

Sam looks at him seriously.

Dean grins.

Sam looks disgusted.

Dean: Come on man! Craps table! We'd clean up!

Hee! I can't wait to see where this goes but please please please don't kill either of the brothers. I'm already very anxious about Dean's final, very ambiguous look. He was joking around with Sam to try to calm him down but it was just that - calming Sam. Who knows what's on Dean's mind?
