Part 1 because my reply was too long ;)koalathebearDecember 29 2005, 08:32:34 UTC
Wow, you sure do have many opinions
*laugh* I think everyone has many opinions, but for the most part they remain as unvocalised Thought Bubbles.
Often I'll say something and a friend will say: "Did you really say that?"
I'll usually say sadly: "No.. it was just a thought bubble but I wish I had said it though!!" :) LJ is a great place for vocalising those thought bubbles. :)
Personally, the scene where he's with (as grrliz quotes) "Puff Minions" and Harry comes up to warn him about the dragons, I don't think the book!Cedric would have smiled at his friends about them laughing at Harry... it didn't seem a very Cedric thing to do. But there are always going to be book/film discrepancies.
I agree with you - that was probably the scene that stuck out in my head the most - also him lying on a Hufflepuff guy's knee was kind of a weird Logan Echolls thing to do designed to send Slash Writers into a slathering frenzy. :) That aisde, that moment made him seem quite laddish and blokey. His portrayal wasn't so anti-Cedric as to make me dislike him. In a way it just made me think about the character more deeply than I did before so I'm very grateful for it. As I mentioned, it had never even occurred to me to write an HP fan fic before I saw the movie so clearly his performance moved me.
Ever since the film, I can't picture Cedric with dark hair! To me, "dark hair" is a dark brown, and in the film Pattinson's hair is lighter, and now whenever I read Cedric he has light hair, not dark. I suppose it's like whenever I read Hagrid I picture movie!Hagrid, etc.
I'm the same with Hagrid. Same with a lot of the characters actually but for me I guess even before the movie I had a fairly strong idea of him in my head. After I read Goblet of Fire the first time and said how said I was, one of my co-workers at the time said; "Oh you're just sad because he's good-looking!" No, I was sad because it was a waste, he was a nice guy .... just lots of reasons. He was nice even in Azkaban when he was still just a blip on the radar plot.
I think it depends how fully formed your mind's images are before you see the film. Then again, I had read Lord of the Rings quite a number of times prior to the movie and I have to say that most of my images of the book now reflect Peter Jackson's images. I realise that not for the first time I've completely contradicted my own argument. Oh well!
