My heart just burst a little when I saw your tag reading Walter Blythe.
I have a lump in my throat just thinking about him, dear Koala. I had a huge crush on him, and I still cry buckets when I get to "And so - goodnight." *sob*
I don't mind the long quote. It's been a while since I read it. And it's absolutely heartbreaking! Poor Una. Poor Rilla. Why did Walter have to die????
I kind of regret bringing up Rilla of Ingleside now because I'm reliving the agony I felt when I finished reading Rilla.
That's it? It's over? What happened next? I ran around madly looking up every single book by LM Montgomery I could find to see if there was any mention of Kenneth and Rilla. Nothing.
Kind of like after Gone With The Wind I suppose. And THEN what happened??? Tell me!!! :)
Ack! I know exactly what you mean -- from the back of my copy of M. M. Kaye's The Far Pavillions:We all remember certain sweeping novels we hated to see come to an end; it was almost like breaking up with someone we love. I always remember reading that when I was a child and not really understanding, until I finished the book, what it meant.
This is how I feel about most of my favorite books - I did the SAME EXACT THING - I looked madly for anything on Rilla and Kenneth. (sometimes this twin-ish thing really freaks me out, btw). I was so heartbroken at not being able to find out what happened next with them. Similarly, I desperately wanted to know what happened to Winter and Alex after the end of M. M. Kaye's Shadow of the Moon (and many other stories)...and I often have the same reaction with tv shows.
*sigh* Yes. Hence my Hockey Night fan fic and other bits and pieces here and there. I also angsted over Winter and Alex. I angsted over Rory and Hero in MM Kaye's "Trade Wind" until I read Death in Zanzibar and discovered that they married and pretty much lived happily ever after.
I wanted more Rilla/Kenneth story simply because although Rilla had come a long way as a character, she had always seemed too lightweight to be a daughter of Anne and I wanted her to grow a little more. Also, we never got enough of a glimpse into Kenneth apart from the fact that he was all noble and good-looking and thought that Rilla was pretty/alluring/haunting. Theirs was a relationship that was very much based on appearance although it could have been much more - he we had chance to see it.....
