When I Heard the Learned Astronomer by Walt Whitman

May 19, 2004 00:19

When I heard the learned astronomer,
When the proofs, the figures, were ranged in columns before me,
When I was shown the charts and diagrams, to add, divide, and measure them,
When I sitting heard the astronomer where he lectured with much applause in the lecture-room,
How soon unaccountable I became tired and sick,
Till rising and gliding out I wandered off by myself,
In the mystical moist night-air, and from time to time,
Looked up in perfect silence at the stars.

I love this poem. Particular the bolded bit above.

It was a mixed sort of day. I'm working on another due dilgence right now with N and Hera. Hera is fabulous and I enjoy working with her a lot. I don't think I could have been criticised for not delegating if I had had her to work with previously. There's a real difference when you work with someone who is on the same wavelength - it makes work almost a pleasure.

The problem is, another project blew up today on which I was only slightly involved, but I appear to have been sucked into it with a vengeance. Fortunately I have Hera to help me on that one as well so I'm not completely screwed. I was mildly vexed with Michael today for a number of reasons which I won't go into here.

Bro is coming to visit at the end of May which will be great.
