It's not just that the Logan/Veronica moments were few in this one. I don't have a lot to say about this episode because in large part it was about the Duncan/Veronica relationship. Even the Mystery of the Week was simply a mechanism to explore Veronica's relationship with Duncan and it's not a relationship in which I'm particularly interested or invested. So just a few quick comments from me.
2x04 Green-Eyed Monster
- I quite liked Julie, the jealous, insecure, flakey blonde girl with doubts about Collin Nevin her not handsome but oh so adorable Scottish boyfriend!
- I actually liked seeing that Duncan was haunting the corridors of the hospital to see Meg. It shows that he doesn't just walk away, that he cared and that he does feel something. It also means that hopefully he and Veronica will break up faster becaue to be honest even if she doesn't get with Logan right away, I'm not a huge fan of Duncan/Veronica love scenes / kissing. It just doesn't seem very romantic or sexy to me. I only liked moment with them and that was the Musical Montage of Non-Incestuous Young Love from the first episode - that was genuinely sweet. Since then it's felt very forced.
- I have to say again that Veronica is wearing too much eye make-up this season. Her eyes are scaring me a lot.
- Vampy Veronica is hilarious. She does it so well and I am so charmed by the fact that Colin is not the slightest bit interested. I also love the fact that Veronica isn't offended. She know she's attractive but for her it's just another part of her, not her most important characteristic so she's totally cool with the fact that Colin doesn't fall at her feet - in fact she's happy for Julie. Wallace at the door selling 'opened' candy is also a hoot although I predict a match bitchslapping match between Jackie and Veronica in days to come .... it's not looking good.
I have to mention, Colin's accent is to die for. I'm one of those cliched koalas that adores an Irish or a Scottish accent.
- I like having Mac back again but wow, blink and you miss her. I hope they give her a proper storyline soon! Can they pair her up with Wallace? That's random I know but I like both of them a lot. :) Also, what crap is this about Meg's parents being prepared to pull the plug on Meg if there's something bad on the computer hard drive? Huh?
- I'm pleased that there's another exchange between Veronica and Logan but I'm not so pleased that Veronica is implying wrongdoing on the part of Logan yet again. I guess some things never change.
Logan:: Okay. God, I just can't take the begging.
He makes a show of looking like he's persuaded.
Logan:: I'll relent, just once. But, ah, no cuddling after...and I won't call you in the morning.
Veronica's unimpressed.
Veronica: Saturday, September twenty-fourth, there was a two minute and twenty-three second phone call on Weevil's cell phone made from your house. The caller claimed that Curly Moran was responsible for the bus crash. The same Curly Moran who's friends with your dad. [accusatory] Any explanation?
Logan:: My day is complete. Veronica Mars has accused me of evil.
Logan pretends to twirl an invisible moustache and I can't help thinking that he looks a bit ... tired or drained. I don't know if it was Jason Dohring being tired or whether or not they were deliberately making Logan not look completely well. It works for me anyway, the snark and the wit is just on the surface and he's not a happy little boy.
Logan:: Hm. Where to start? Oh yes, who the hell is Curly Moran? And how do you know he knows my dad and what conspiracy theory have you pulled out of your ass this time?
Veronica: The fact, evidenced by the poster in your house, is that Curly Moran was the stunt-coordinator on "The Long Haul," starring Aaron Echolls, circa 1982.
Logan nods at Veronica.
Veronica: Now, September twenty-fourth?
Logan:: Like I have any idea wha....
This has happened before. Logan denies and then mid-thought remembers something. Do you remember when he told Veronica about Duncan's epilepsy attack? Same thing here - obviously he doesn't finish his thoughts before speaking. :) Anyway, he reaches into his backpack where he just happens to have a copy of an invitation to a party that he himself threw that has already taken place. Hee. Yeah all right, he might have just forgotten to chuck it out.
Logan:: I think I do remember that night. That was the night of my Life Short party.
Veronica: Of course, a group of lower-middle class Neptune High students plummet to their death and the 09ers throw a party.
Logan:: Hence the Life Short part. It was in their honour and in the end, it wasn't just your social betters. In fact, your pal, Weevil, and his biker boys crashed it.
He moves past her, pauses and gives a fake laugh.
Logan:: Oh, and, ah...
He turns back to look at her.
Logan:: Lamb and a half dozen deputies came by to break it up, or at least collect the kegs.
Veronica: There are five numbers registered to your house. This call came from a number I don't recognize.
Logan:: Well, gee willikers, Veronica, it sounds like you're on to something. Maybe the pool boy did it.
Logan pretends to look at his wrist. He's not wearing a watch, he's just being a jerk.
Logan:: Um.
He shows Veronica his bare wrist and walks off. She stares after him, then turns away.
Yeah all right it wasn't crackling with love and romance by any means but again any scenes with these two always pull the eye and the attention. It's not just snark, it's all about the eye-contact, the tension and the way they skirt around one another. To quote a certain snarky young man. Oh young love. :)
- In the Alicia's hidden past/Wallace's paternity storyline we have a Darth Vader: "I am your father ..." moment. Hmmm.
Overall thoughts
Not bad, not great. It felt like filler in a way but I'm not going to knock it because I enjoyed it and I liked seeing Logan and Veronica interact again albeit briefly. I had zero interest in the Duncan/Veronica/jealous storyline but I did enjoy the Julie/Colin storyline - it was beyond cute and I hope things work out for those two!
