2046: Rainbow. Swooning moment. (soundclip & transcript included for ease of swooning)

Oct 19, 2005 09:10

My friends call this the most boring, bloody awful, meaningless piece of crap in the world. They suffered through it when I told them I wanted to see it at the cinemas and then railed at me for it afterwards.

Se Hyun says it's the most 无聊 wúliáo (boring, silly stupid and senseless) movie he's ever seen in his life.

Someone very dear to my heart (ahem you know who you are!) fell asleep three times while trying to watch it.

Me? I call it a thing of beauty and love it. Swoon with me over the dreamy voice of Takuya Kimura :)

Amended: Icons not by me. I am as artistic as a rock. :) All icon credits are in the file names:

"He was a writer, He thought he wrote about the future but it really was the past. In his novel, a mysterious train left for 2046 every once in a while. Everyone who went there had the same intention ... to recapture their lost memories. It was said that in 2046, nothing ever changed. Nobody knew for sure if it was true, because nobody who went there had ever come back - except for one. He was there. He chose to leave. He wanted to change.
....- Official synopsis

"I once fell in love with someone ... After a while she wasn't there. I went to 2046 . I thought she might be waiting for me there. But I couldn't find her. I can't stop wondering if she loved me or not. But I never found out. Maybe her answer was like a secret ..... that no one else would ever know."
....- Tak)

Chow, the Tony Leung character moves into room 2047 of a Hong Kong hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui. He encounters one of the daughters of the landlord - Wang Jing Wen who is played by the adorable and incredibly talented Faye Wong. Wang Jing Wen, notwithstanding the opposition of her father has fallen in love with the enemy - a young Japanese man (played by the gorgeous Takuya Kimura) who is staying at the hotel. See my earlier take on the Directions Scene.

Their relationship is not the primary story in the movie (Leung's constant shagging of Zhang Zi Yi gets heaps more screentime :P ) but it is my favourite - and not just because I love Faye Wong.

Chow has been disappointed by love in the past. He has allowed his past setbacks to 'defeat' him and he cannot help but be moved by the fact that Wang Jin Wen and her sweetheart remain devoted to one another in the face of all adversity. See my earlier take on the Despair Scene.

In his mind, Tak (the Kimura character) who is able to continue to hang onto the hope of love - becomes the person he wishes he could be. An idealised version of himself.

The following scene in particular is one of my favourites. Jing Wen had returned after a long absence. Hearing Casta Diva again, Chow realises that once again the landlord is screaming abuse at his daughter for continuing to correspond with her Japanese lover. He watches as the landlord tears the letters to shreds and throws them into the face of his daughter.

He offers to be the go-between. This causes a perceptible happiness in Wang Jing Wen as Chow receives letters from Japan and secretly passes them to Wang Jing Wen. Similarly, she passes letters to him for him to post.

The letters are impossibly romantic and Kimura's reading of the letter is perfect - his voice is deep and seductive. In the background, the music is Adagio by Secret Garden. I consider it the theme of Faye and Kimura in this movie.

The soundclip can be downloaded by right-clicking
here. Please download and save rather than streaming :) It's short but swoony. I should add that notwithstanding his damning criticisms of the movie, even Se Hyun loved this clip and asked me to give him the mp3 so he could learn how to recite it. I told him that his delivery of it in no way makes me feel swoony. :)

Here is a translation of what he says in English:

"Let's see each other again. Then if you still think we shouldn't be together ... tell me so .... frankly....The day, six years ago ... a rainbow appeared in my heart, It's still there. Like a flame burning inside me. But what are your real feelings for me? Are they like a rainbow after the rain? Or ... did that rainbow fade away long ago? I await your answer ....."

Are you swooning yet? :) For those of you want to read along (like I did :), here's a line by line breakdown of what he says in Japanese with kana and rōmaji transcribed.

No, I don't speak Japanese but I 'taught myself' enough Japanese by reading a textbook to allow myself to muddle my way through part of the transcription and then poor Hera did the rest (which is most of it :). Yes I drag my unfortunate friends through my various obsessions.....

Also to my disappointment all the Japanese guys I know always swear they wouldn't be caught dead saying something so blatantly romantic. Ever! :) Thank goodness for the moofies.

Big sigh from Koala ....

My earlier post about the music of 2046 is here and the link to the gorgeous, dreamy and otherworldly song Perfidia (orchestral) still works!

Hmmm, I promised Qiu Yuan and Kim yesterday that I'd go to class today but gack I still feel like a sullen lump of flu :) Don't sympathise with me, I'm just sickly. :)
