As mentioned before, Shinkai Hajime and Ogawa Ayumi are one of my favourite ships of all time ..
First meeting(s). Antipathy. Anger. Grudging respect.
I love that food is such an integral part of their relationship. Shinkai goes into the restaurant and finds Ogawa at the sushi train stuffing her face on her own.
As they speak, they find they have more in common than they know.
Exchanging insults. In this particular scene, Ogawa's poking at Shinkai, telling him it was a good landing - even though she knows full well it wasn't him.
Sometimes she trails after him talking, sometimes he trails after her talking.
But when he needs to, he goes to her to talk … to speak frankly and her words give him clarity.
Now he's trailing after her asking her to dinner. She says no, she's already eaten
But then he turns up at their usual haunt after seeing her motorcycle parked outside.
He learns that she's afraid of flying. He says he'd like to see the sky above the clouds.
So manages to get himself assigned as the pilot co-piloting her flight to Honolulu.
When he realises that it's too much for her, he persuades her to disembark and she phones him in Honolulu to thank him … He wants to know why she's afraid of flying and she promises to tell him one day … He doesn't try to push it, though and they talk about how one day he'll take her for a flight.
After a sobering flight where he transports victims of a terrible fire from Shanghai back to Tokyo, Shinkai is introspective and mildly depressed. Ogawa sees Shinkai's land rover parked out the front of the restaurant so goes in. She doesn't sit near him though and he is annoyed with her for snubbing him. She's not snubbing him, though because the whole reason she goes in the restaurant is to see him …
She sits across from him
He tells her about his day and his concerns
In turn, she tells him of her perspective on things. She's not deliberately trying to comfort him, but the end result is that she does provide comfort. Although he then tells her that if she was always so nice, she'd be more popular and they return to their usual, comfortable bickering that seems to be their natural and preferred state of affairs.
On a trip back from the US, Shinkai gives Ogawa a gift - plans of the latest Boeing plane.
He asks her to dinner - for purely professional reasons of course.
"In that case," she concedes. He looks a bit huffy :)
In this episode, in their own ways, Shinkai and Ogawa work towards mending fences between Koda and Fukaura and they sit on a look out area by the runway to talk.
Shinkai lays it out there and confesses that he was pissed off seeing Ogawa hanging out with Koda. Surprisingly, Ogawa reciprocates and confesses that she was jealous, too at seeing Shinkai with Fukaura. Shinkai asks her out for dinner. "But we eat together all the time," she responds and the two agree to finally go on an actual date …
Unfortunately, Shinkai's flight back is delayed, making the date impossible. But Shinkai and Ogawa are quite different from Koda and Togashi who after all these years are still being evasive and skirting around one another. Shinkai phones Ogawa when he gets back and confides that notwithstanding the hour - he just wants to see her … "Onegaishimasu," he pleads with her, a very polite and respectful manner of making a request.
She shows up, but he's exhausted and falls asleep mid-conversation, thereby thwarting the date once again. Nonetheless, she watches over him with a fond smile, leaving in the morning - but leaves him a note.
Following Captain Yamagami's enforce retirement, Shinkai is still reeling from the day's events and talking them through with Ogawa. When he discloses what he knows of Koda's past, she looks distraught and runs away from him, leaving him very concerned.
After failing to find Ogawa (who is hiding from him), Abe discovers he does not like lying to Shinkai and tells him that Ogawa has injured her hand and is at the clinic. In panicked concern, Shinkai goes running towards the clinic to find her.
He insists on driving her home because of her injury.
In the car, she apologises to him for her behaviour and he merely nods. She asks him if he wants to know what troubles her and asks (very respectfully), if he's allowed to ask and she looks at him and nods slowly.
When she tells him of her past, he is sympathetic about her parent's death but has little patience for her self-pity about Koda.
He basically tells her not to behave like a heroine out of a Greek Tragedy as she agonises about whether Koda respects her as a good mechanic or merely pities her and feels guilt.
Adorably he takes her to his family home to sail on a boat. The boat isn't available but she has sashimi with his father who discloses a number of sweet and embarrassing stories about Shinkai's childhood.
Poor Shinkai :)
Shinkai's father has even decorated the sashimi with two flowers … all for Ogawa's benefit. It's very sweet.
The next day, clearly at Shinkai's suggestion, Ogawa speaks to Koda, returns his money to him and sets the record straight. Shinkai is waiting for her when she emerges and they set quite close to one another …
When he tries to take her hand, he accidentally grabs her injured hand, causing her to cry out and snip at him… He storms away, equal measures of contrite and frustrated. But she forgives him and goes to stand beside him and tucks her good hand in his.
Startled, he looks down, takes her hand in his …
and then pulls her closer.
When he suffers his catastrophic injury, it's only Ogawa who believes in him. When she goes to speak with him, he's harsh and angry at her at first … but she manages to reach him …
In the next scene we see them driving somewhere in his land rover together. I found myself enjoying the sight of Ogawa driving them both. There was something rather lovely about the reversal of roles - Shinkai being driven by Ogawa and being ok with it. Trusting her and depending on her.
When they reach the water, Ogawa doesn't force the issue and lets Shinkai make his own decision. He tells her that he's going to fly again … They almost kiss but he says he's going to save that for the time when he's able to fly again. Typically, she calls him an idiot :)
When Shinkai goes for his surgery, he's startled to see Ogawa waiting for him … I love the way he props himself up, turns back and points at her cheekily as if to promise that he's coming back - to her. It makes her smile.
When Shinkai gets cleared to fly again, he goes in search of Ogawa to tell her the good news. She wants to be on the trip with him. They have their usual exchange of insults. "If you fail I’ll laugh in your face”, she tells him and runs away pushing the trolley, leaving him to glare after her and then shout out after her: "Well if you get scared I’m not helping you this time!"
The flight from Tokyo to Honolulu is filled with much drama and Ogawa and Shinkai need to work together to reassure the crew. He passes his flight exam and she congratulates him.
His peck of a kiss is scored by her and she gives him a proper kiss .. open-mouthed and rather hot, compared to the usual chaste, closed-mouthed kisses I've seen in so many dramas.
I know they'll be so happy …
They'll never take each other seriously :)
Also, I can never get over Shinkai telling Ota how to recognise Ogawa :D
