I've been working on and off this week from home - more off than on, though and tomorrow will be the first day back in the office. It's going to be another incredibly busy year and my boss wants to renew my contract for another year, which is nice but does raise the question of what projects I'll be working on and with whom. Our projects are always large and complex so I have no doubt it will all be interesting - it's just wondering what the teams will be ...will I be an embedded legal resource for multiple projects or will I be allocated to one giant project?
Main things to juggle this year will be:
- work (of course)
- dog rescue - trying to get our current foster dog Jerry a good home
- taking time off for some annual leave - I have a bunch saved up
- deciding whether we both go to Canada this year or not and if so when - Christmas or when it's warmer. Ever since seeing Iron Road, I've had a hankering to do a Vancouver-Toronto train trip. #1 on the list seems good: "The ultimate long-haul journey? Across Canada by train, Toronto to Vancouver on VIA Rail. The trip lasts nearly four days and there are several departures each week; if you want to save money, travel in winter, when prices are discounted. VIA Rail recently changed the schedule to improve dailight viewing in the Rockies.www.viarail.ca/trains/en"T
Travel means kennelling the dogs, though. I'd love to go to
South Durras again. It's so beautiful there and we always have such a great time. It would depend on when
Jerry gets adopted because we really can't take four dogs.
Dan also might want to volunteer as an Enforcer at PAX in Melbourne again. He's done it twice before although he skipped last year's PAX. He's busy working on developing a turn-based strategy computer game called
Kitbash though so a lot will depend on how that's going. If he's on a roll, he's not going to want to be roaming around.
I also want to read as much as I can. Kindle Unlimited has been so much fun for finding new things to read but there are also heaps of
puzzles to do this year and also
board games. We're almost finished with Pandemic Legacy which has been very, very interesting and challenging. The last game even ended up in tears for one of the players - not me fortunately! :)
I also want to do more fannish stuff, whether in the way of blogging about things I've watched or writing fan fiction. tumblr is kind of a poisoned chalice because on the one hand all of the beautiful images can be very inspirational for the muse - it is also a really bad time waster.
I want to walk the dogs more - difficult when there are four! The dogs are happy to chill out but they really do deserve to be walked more often. Jerry is taken to dog school every Sunday because he's still too excitable around strange dogs.
Finally I'd like to learn something new this year, whether it's Spanish or maybe Arabic - just something to keep the brain elastic. :)
Movies I'm excited for this year:
- Rogue One
- Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
I am not sure how I can last until 2017 for Episode VIII of Star Wars but I suppose I'll just have to cope. I wish they could come out each year like the Lord of the Rings movies did but I suppose the movies are huge and we want them to take the time they need to do a good job. The tricky thing for me is that for episode VII, I had lost the Star Wars love after the awful prequels so was pretty much able to avoid spoilers. This time around, I'm subscribed to so many Star Wars tumblr blogs it is going to be difficult to avoid spoilers. I'm not a spoilerphone myself but Dan is the biggest spoiler phobe in the world - he wouldn't even let us go and see the latest Hunger Games in case there were Star Wars spoilers. He says I can't keep a secret and if I know a spoiler my face gives it away so I need to reman spoiler free as well :)
I'm sad that livejournal is so very quiet these days... but I'm very grateful that it still exists. When greatestjournal vanished, I lost so many of my posts and a lot of fan fiction, too which was disappointing :(
Anyway, hoping everyone's having a great new year so far.
