Further to my earlier post about the frequent misspelling of "devastating", I saw devastating spelt "devestating", "devistating" and "devasting" the other day.
Then I read that "definitely" has become one of the most misspelled words in the English language. "Per se" is sometimes written as "per say". I also see "consistency" misspelled a lot.
I think that part of the problem is that in Word people have an auto-spell checker, but not everyone installs a spell checker in their web browser. I have one that does Aussie spell-check for me. LivejornalLivejournal and the internet generally are crawling with sloppy spelling.
Then there are the words that won't come up in a spell check: Your/You're, Its/it’s, , To/Too/Two, Were/Where/We’re, There/Their/They’re, Here/Hear, Lose/Loose (gosh I see this one soooo much).
The Canadian goes bonkers when people use the word "literally" when they mean "virtually" or "almost".
Of course, livejournal's Biggest Bad is the fact that soooooooooooo many people don't now the difference between
cannon and canon. Kind of drives me bonkers sometimes :)
