I've finished season 3 of
Friday Night Lights and am all caught up with season 4, having seen the latest episode being "4.08 Toilet Bowl".
I am really, really enjoying season 4 even though it's something of a downer. Quick thoughts.
1. There are still no Asians in Texas (or at least Dillon).
2. Wow, the McCoys really are super-evil ... when I see Joe McCoy's smirk, I feel enraged :D Who knew that JD would turn out to be such a jerk as well?
3. I love the East Dillon storyline. I love that Coach is still plugging away and trying so hard even though it all looks hopeless. Yes, the Lions are like the Bad News Bears but it's still quite novel to see this in the storyline.
4. I'm a little ambivalent about Jess - on the one hand her character seems interesting and the actress is pretty good, on the other I really don't like the way she's dangling BOTH Landry and Vince.
5. I cannot stand Becky or Becca or whoever that vapid little miss is. The actress is awful and the character is worse. She's just bad and sucks up way too much screen-time. I don't know why they needed her. I would have preferred to get to know Devin better or at least someone who wasn't quite so empty and grating.
6. Poor Tami is going through hell! I don't know what to say! She's tough, but it must be so hard. And Glenn having a crush on her? Incredibly awkward - I felt so sorry for him because he has been so lovely and supportive of her.
7. I loved Tinker helping out Luke - I mean it was sad that no one else helped, but there was something really heart-warming about seeing the lone Tinker lumbering over the hill like that :) Also sweet was how he told Luke's dad what a great guy Luke is.
8. I liked how Vince and Luke have developed a respect for one another. It felt natural and not contrived. They've learned that they need one another and that their lives are easier when they cooperate - that's kind of cool. I loved them sitting in Sears watching the dvd with drinks and looking very comfortable :D
9. I'm worried about Vince's trouble-maker friend. He has an evil face and he's going to lead poor Vince astray - he's already doing that to the Riggins brothers :P
10. I don't know what to say about Tim. It's like the writers want his character to hit rock-bottom. I'm not fussed about Tim throwing away his scholarship and coming home. He's never wanted to college - but what's wrong with him coming back and making a life for himself in a trade or as an assistant coach? Why do they have to have him hanging around jail-bait like the vacuous Becky and then stooping to working at the chop shop with the brainless Billy :P
11. Buddy Garrity is constantly making me flip flop. Evil, good, evil, good. His interactions with Lyla last season were amazingly heart-warming but then he was so evil about the Jumbotron and siding with McCoy in the beginning - and now he's come around again by telling the evil McCoy what he thinks of him. He's being so amazing to the Taylors and is such an ally to the Lions.
12. I was really surprised the Lions actually won the game in "Toilet Bowl"! I was getting so used to them losing all the time :)
13. I'm really worried about Luke's injury and the rashness of doping himself up on meds from an unscrupulous doctor!
14. I can't believe Matt would just leave like that without saying goodbye to Julie or contacting her. I know he's all torn up and emotional but it's just not like Matt ... and I am really puzzled why this season they're trying to make it look as though Matt stayed behind in Dillon because of Julie. As far as I knew, it was always about his grandmother - it had nothing to do with Julie because let's face it, she was going to up and leave for college herself eventually.
15. It's weird that Matt's graduated but Landry has not.
16. Tyra has really shown herself to be beyond redemption. She really used Landry most effectively through three seasons of the series and now she's off at college, she's forgotten about him. No doubt she's really busy and stressed, but I can't help thinking that she has found a new Landry so no longer has any use for Landry. To be honest, it never really felt right that she got into college. No matter how hard she supposedly worked, she was constantly bailing out when things got tough - including running off to the rodeo with that chump Cash :P
I have more thoughts but will continue them later :)
