I feel sorry for Irish people ...
As someone of Asian extraction I always cringe at the awful, AWFUL clichés and stereotypes that they have of Asian people. The women are always May Lee or May Ling, the parents are always overbearing and pushy, the accents are always awful, they're often good at kung fu - the list goes on. As an Aussie, I also cringe - accents done by a non-Aussie are always pretty awful and the stereotypes are also pretty bad.
It occurs to me that the people who probably get the worst of it are the Irish. Every actor seems to think that he or she can do an Irish accent and the tv/movie Irish accent always sounds the same - kinda bad. Also, I've heard that the Irish don't really say "Top o' the mornin' to ya" to each other all the time. :D
I was reminded of the awfulness of Irish accents when I watched episode 9 of Burn Notice, The Long Way Back in which Fiona's brother Sean Glenanne (played by the English Gideon Emery) comes to Miami because Thomas O'Neill (played by the English Paul Blackthorne) is in town to hunt her down. In this episode, each of Michael Westen (played by the American Jeffrey Donovan), Fiona (played by the English Gabrielle Anwar), Sean and Thomas have to speak in an Irish accent. They're all pretty awful! Fiona spoke in an Irish accent in episode 1 and was so bad at it, she never spoke it again - until episode 9.
Oh dear .. to be sure ... to be sure ...
PS: I love Burn Notice - but O the Irish accents ...
