Photos from an outing to 红螺寺 Hong Luo Temple

Today we went with James and our Chinese school to 红螺寺 Hong Luo Temple or the Red Snail Temple that is over an hour's drive outside of Beijing. Some photos of the day beneath the cut. Photos are taken by The Canadian or me.

This little Kiwi kid attracted a lot of attention because he was wearing a lobster hat :)

Bamboo

Huge crowds of tourists

These scary panda statues totally look like things that could eat your brain.

In this 'game', you had to throw small metal discs and try to ring a bell.

The Canadian and I failed, but others succeeded :)

This poor little girl was sent on top of the bridge by her parents to have a photo taken and just as she got up there, people started throwing the metal discs at the bell and scared her to death :)

Near the entrance of the temple

More crowds

Posing for a picture

Little girl and her mother trying to cross the water

Although we didn't see the famous red leaves today, we did see some beautiful golden ones

The thick cloud of incense-induced smoke is ironic given that the temple area is supposed to be 'non-smoking' and no fires are supposed to be lit :)

Some nice images from our walk

A Buddha

They put red cloaks on the Buddha statues.

This image is a bit creepy though - looks like the statues are closing in on an unfortunate victim

We started the climb up which is always hard for me given my lunglessness. The pagodah on the hill looked sooooooooooo far away

Looking down on a pagodah at a lower level when we were climbing

Almost there

Then we walked back from the pagodah

But we were then confronted by this rather daunting climb up the hill

I wussed out and couldn't do it so we elected to take the slide down the hill ...

Silly sign

Roasted corn

For RMB1 I rang the bell just like this kid did

More nice photos from the walk

We can't help giggling at this lady's expression as she relaxes with her iPod :)

Bamboo walkway

Cute kid with corn

We're in this photo :)

Nearby markets

Gourds, fruits and veg at the local markets

Persimmon - before and after i.e. fresh and preserved. If you eat a persimmon before it's ripe, your mouth becomes painfully numb. It's happened to me before.

Knick knacks

I'll bet Santa feels so left out among all the Russian dolls ...

We were totally overwhelmed by the barrage of food at lunchtime.

Beautiful dog ...
