Blurb: Dean gets transported back in time and ends up in Lawrence, Kansas, where he crosses paths with a young version of his parents, who have just fallen in love.

Season 4 of Supernatural has been very, very good and this episode was no exception. There was one thing that rather bothered me about this episode though ...

I've mentioned before that although I really enjoy watching Supernatural, my incurable shippiness notwithstanding, Supernatural just does not lend itself to shippiness.

1. Not only does slash not light my fire, Wincest definitely does NOT light my fire. Whether it's Dean/Sam, John/Dean, John/Sam or John/Dean/Sam, I'm just not into 'cest fic at ALL. Also not a fan of the RPF in this fandom either.

2. The female characters throughout seasons 1 and 2 were usually just fly by nighters who came and went and frequently appeared to be token characters designed to remind us that the brothers are straight, notwithstanding the fan fic. The character of Jo was horribly reviled, largely by the 'cest-shippers, I fear ...

3. Season 3 tried really, really hard to introduce two female characters are regular cast members - Bela and Ruby. I don't think they were entirely successful at breaking down the Fanon 'Cesty Ships ...

Therefore, notwithstanding how great this episode was, I was filled with Great Anxiety for the inevitable increase in more 'cest-fic!!! I cut because I spoil - and am obnoxious and critical :)

In a moment of intensity, Sam goes off to fight bad guys.

His aims are simple (1) to destroy the bad guys; (2) no less important - to hang out with Ruby and hopefully create a counter-ship.

This season, no doubt a new slashy ship was created. Castiel/Dean. I mean come on, Castiel always visits Dean when he's sleeping.

Sits on the edge of his bed and looks profound.

Dean: "Dude, don't think I don't know you're trying to create an alterna-ship".

Castiel sends Dean back in time to where he meets his father, John Winchester, as a young man. This will inevitably spawn Dean/Young John fics on top of the Dean/John fics that already exist. Kudos to the casting team, they picked a young actor who actually is very believable as a young John. He also has an 'earlier era' look about him.

Castiel materialises again, just to keep the fledgling Castiel/Dean shippers happy.

The introduction of a young Mary Campbell is good because perhaps it will generate some Young John/Young Mary shippers.

Alas, the fact that Dean thinks that his mother as a young woman was 'hot', and the fact that she sneaks up on him in the dark, means that we're bound to get some Wrong!Young Mary/Dean shippers :'(

They fight in a provocative manner, designed to be sexy and unfortunately ship-inducing

Dean notices that Young Mary is a hunter!

We then meet Samuel Campbell and Deanna Campbell. Not only does this provide hope of a Samuel/Deanna ship, this means that Dean was named after his grandmother and Sam was named after his grandfather.

Oh noes, is this the beginning of Wrong!Grandpa Sam/Dean shipping??? I mean they plot together.

They pose as priests together!

To counter this, the writers try to ramp up the Wrong!Young Mary/Dean ship

Castiel materialises in a dark car and rasps enigmatically at Dean to fan the flames of the fledgling Castiel/Dean ship.

As if this maritime lane wasn't crowded enough, the Yellow-Eyed Demon appears and sows the seeds of a Wrong!Yellow-Eyed Demon/Mary Winchester ship! Egads, say it isn't so?

Young John Winchester/Young Mary pop up briefly to appease the het, vanilla shippers like me.

When the Yellow-Eyed Demon takes possession of Grandpa Samuel, I start to feel very uneasy

When they kill off Grandma Deanna, I get even more anxious ...

Dean looks worried, too

Especially when they keep making him exchange goo goo eyes with his young mother

Young Mary is good at making goo-goo eyes.

She spends most of the episode peeking winsomely at the camera. She reminds me of someone else. She looks like she should be in Charlies Angels.

The Young John Winchester/Young Mary encounters crisis and an obstacle when Young John is killed and Young Mary grieves

Dean read the sides to the episode and comes hurtling to the scene to try to stop the wrong!ship that he knows is coming ...

Too late! Not only has Young Mary just done a deal with the Yellow Eyed Demon, promising him access to her house 10 years later, the Wrong!Grandpa Sam possessed by Yellow Eyed Demon/Young Mary ship is born :'( I quietly yak in the corner ...

Dean appears equally horrified by this new Wrong!Ship that has been spawned by this show.

The writers have Yellow Eyed Demon run away and Grandpa Sam's carcass fall limply dead to the ground before hordes of horrified vanilla shippers like me can clobber him with our bedroom slippers

Young Mary gives Dean another one of her winsome looks designed to: (1) apologise for the Wrong!Grandpa Sam possessed by Yellow Eyed Demon/Young Mary ship; (2) continue to fan the flames of the Wrong!Young Mary/Dean ship; (3) apologise for having made a deal with the Yellow Eyed Demon that will lead to her own death and the Weirdification of Sam

Castiel reappears and rasps smoulderingly at his shipmate

He stands in the corner of Dean's bedroom and tells him that: (1) Dean couldn't have changed the past; (2) Sam's off doing weird things that no one understands; (3) if Dean doesn't stop Sam, then "they" will

Castiel: "You can't escape this ship. The LJ shippers have set up a Castiel/Dean comm already"
Dean: "Crap."

Dean loves that side-on look so much.
