Open To All...

Dr. Rodney McKay, brilliant astrophysicist and the world's leading expert on Ancient technology, placed a help wanted sign in the window, and he began the work involved in securing the back room to his new place in New York City.

He’d found the perfect location in New York. One equipped with an open front area where he could carry on the guise of an overpriced technician and an easily securable back room where he could set up his lab to do his real work. Upstairs held several vacant apartments. The largest and nicest one he’d taken as his own, not that he expected to be there much, the rest he left as is.

Up until last month he had been happy with his existence on Atlantis. More than happy really, but with the increased threat from the Pegasus Galaxy, all civilian personnel had been removed from the outpost and Atlantis was now strictly a military operation. Exploration and research was no longer being conducted as the war between both the Wraith and the Pegasus Galaxy Replicators became increasingly hostile.

Rodney had argued that they still needed him there; that his knowledge of Atlantis and other Ancient technology would be of immeasurable use to them. They on the other hand argued that if Atlantis was overrun that he would become a casualty of war and that was more than the IOA was willing to risk. He liked that they thought that highly of him, (as they should), but not that they were going to prevent him from doing what he wanted. Either way, he had no say in the matter.

So for now he was back on Earth.

Deciding to distance himself slightly from the military he’d moved to New York were he could be closer to his sister. However he couldn’t walk away completely. He’d arranged for some of his favorite research projects accompanied him to New York and the military agreed to continue his funding as long as he continued providing results and consultations when needed. An acceptable trade as far as Rodney was concerned.

The only downside was they refused to provide him with assigned military staff. The technology he had with him was useless without him, (unless someone who just happened to have the gene came along), and in the grand scheme of things - rather useless. He brought nothing that could be used as a weapon, but still he wanted his own personal security. Not to mention someone to assist him in his work. Things that surely anyone with half a brain could do - answer the phone, take messages, get lunch, run basic errands, etc.

Oh, and maybe find him a cat. Now that he was back on Earth, he needed a cat.
