I have defended America a number of times down here. I have reminded people that not everyone in the United States has a lot of money to throw around as some down here like to believe. I have also reminded them that America obviously does have a right to know who is entering it.
The immigration debate has come up a number of times as one might expect. I am asked almost every time I go to the orphanage how long it takes to get to the United States. Of course they want to leave. Many of them cannot read and will most likely wind up making less than 6 dollars a day here. Even here that is a struggle to live off of.
Why can´t the immigration debate focus on the real issue? Making it possible for Mexicans to live in Mexico? Did you know that in Zacatlan, the Mexican apple capital, you can only buy "grown in Washington" apples? Don´t get me wrong, I love our apples, but why do the mexican growers have to stand by the roads with crates of apples for less than five dollars while their markets sell American fruits? How humiliating.
I guess we cannot have it both ways. We can´t expect that we can make lots of money down here from our cheap fruits, toothbrushes, soaps, kraft cheeses, canadian meats and chocolate puddings that have replaced the mexican products without having repurcussions. I don´t see how anyone can dissagree with that.
Everytime I go shopping I think about it. Walmart owns all the grocery stores I have access to, except for one. Superama, Bodega, Sam´s Club, and of course the real Walmart. They also own the most popular restaurants including El Porton, Vips, Italiannis and more.
Imagine what a difference they could make if they decided to sell Mexican grapes instead of Californian grapes? How many people could stay in Mexico with their families from as decision like that? I find it a little ironic that a corporation that is known to be so conservative on social issues in America might contribute so much to the number of immigrants crossing the border.
But I am no economics major and all I can do is speculate.
