watch that knuck dance

Hi everybody, welcome to knuckleballers. I've been meaning to get this ball rolling and start advertising and such, but I haven't had a lot of time lately. I thought I'd get the ball rolling by giving a shaky top 10 pitchers ever list, and ask you for your's. Here goes ( Read more... )

1. bob gibson - the most intimidating pitcher probably ever. changed pitching forever when his ridiculously dominant 1968 season (22 wins in 31 starts, 1.19 ERA, 268 strikeouts, cy young and and MVP) made MLB lower the pitching mound from 15" to 10". two time world series MVP. 17 strikeouts in a series game. 7 consecutive wins in the world series. perhaps the most dominant postseason pitcher of the latter half of the 20th century.
2. dave stewart - my absolute favorite player when i was a kid. extremely dominant at his peak.
3. goose gossage - one of the best 3 or 4 relievers OAT by any measure.
4. burleigh grimes - not only does he have an awesome name, he was the last legal spitballer in the major leagues, retiring in 1934.
5. nolan ryan - he was always a big strikeout guy who was never really THAT good since the early 70's, but he threw mad heat and played for-fucking-ever. everyone loved nolan ryan and who can forget him pitching with blood on his shirt from kicking robin ventura's ass when he tried to charge the mound? dude, 7 NO HITTERS WHAT. i iknow it's a freak stat kinda but really, 7????
6. rod beck - the most metal of all pitchers
7. jim abbott - absolute phenom on a terribly abysmal angels team in the early 90's. career numbers are not that fantastic, but amazing in his few dominant seasons, especially considering he had to play and field with only one good hand. also notable for making a credible run at 20 losses in 1996 with an 7.48 ERA.
8. jack morris - dude, 10 innings in game 7 of the greatest series ever played. not a HOF guy, but one of the most underrated pitchers in recent memory.
9. dontrelle willis - is quickly becoming one of my favorite players and probably my favorite starter right now. doc gooden without the drug problem. will win some cy youngs.
10. dizzy dean - people always talk about koufax when it comes to extremely dominant and short HOF careers, but dizzy's was close. nasty stuff on the nasty 1940's cardinals, one of baseball's top dynasties.

mad props for mentioning jim abbott, whom i'd completely forgotten about.

speaking of rod beck, do you remember that article, i believe it was on poe news about his come back attempt where he was living in a mobile home in the parking lot of minor league ballfield his team played at? it talked about him having the fans over after the game for a beer?

yeah, nolan ryan is badass. he is easily the most unhittable of all the pitchers, current or throwback, on the latest MVP baseball. i can easily throw a no-hitter with him on the easier settings.

and yah, dontrelle is the man. it's a shame that i bet no one from the NL east is going to do well in the post season since they'll be eating each other's young all damn year. i mean hell, that division is a hell of a lot closer than any other one in either league.
