[On the phone, you may hear a rustling of static, as though someone is running their hands over the receiver. A voice can be heard faintly in the background.]

...looks like a cell phone, but much bigger...odd, why can't I tell what this object is...?

[After about a minute or so, the voice assumes a regular volume.Ah...it seems this is a ( Read more... )

I dunno if anyone's told ya yet, but this is a place called Mayfield. It's a weird ass town that likes to traumatize people.

Yes, and it's located in America, during the 1950s, I've been told. Is there anything else you can tell me?

Ok good so I can skip that part. Ok, so this town isn't like other towns. It's like it's alive or somethin' and not in a good way. It can do strange stuff like grow roads where there wasn't one and warp you back facing town if you try to leave.

Death isn't permanent here, but it's still not pleasant to die.

[Takes a moment to absorb this.]

So I take it that it's impossible to leave this place. And death isn't permanent...? What happens if you do die?

Right now it's impossible, yeah, lots of people are working on ways out, none of them has been successful though.

But yeah, if you die, most of the time you wake up the next morning in your bed.

Hm. I suppose we can only work harder, then.

You just wake up the next morning? Convenient, I suppose, but I imagine it's hardly pleasant.

Yeah, and if you do something the town really doesn't like, it drones you.

Drones?

Ok. There's people here that think you've been there for all of your life, that this is where you're from and this is your world. They're happy and cheery and fit very specific roles.

The town can temporarily or permanently make you think that they're right and that you're like them.

[Ew.]

Sounds unsettling. And even more so to become one of them...

Yeah, it isn't nice at all. Oh yeah, the town sorta wants you to do this on your own too, when you first get here everything that makes you who you are, or even different form a normal human or people of this time, get taken away from you and given back bit by bit.

Everything that makes you who you are...? That would explain quite a bit, then. I wasn't able to determine what this phone was just by looking at it.

Ah, and that would mean I'm no longer half youkai, either...

Yeah. No. The going trend right now is that we get things from home after the towns little games.

And how do we get those things back?

Usually through the mail. Though you can cheat and take a short cut by going directly to the post office. I don't recommend that because they take something from you in exchange. Like an eye or an arm.

Hmm. I think I'd rather wait, then.

So through the mail...would that include less tangible objects? Such as abilities.
