Ring, Ring.
Lauren stared at her cell phone not bothering to move from her curled up position on the couch. The phone continued to light up and ring flashing the words 'Kamenashi Kazuya' on the screen. She sighed.
"Stop calling," she said to the phone while staring at the words. "I don't want to talk to you."
She knew she was being childish, but she couldn't help it. She didn't expect the events of that day. Avoiding him was childish, but better. Wasn't it?
The phone stop ringing and Lauren groaned as yet another voicemail was saved into her phone's memory.
"Fifteen," she muttered. "Kame give up."
But the phone rang again. Lauren glared at it.
Kamenashi Kazuya thought himself to be a careful person. He had never made any decision without thinking carefully about his consequences. Being impulsive wasn't his style.
So when he kissed Lauren on their outing that day, which was merely a friendly day of shopping in Harajuku, he didn't expect the consequences of the outing to be that it ended abruptly, and for him to be standing in Harujukiu alone with enough bags to own his own store.
And now he was back at his apartment, repeatedly calling her number. He had to say something to her. He had to explain his actions.
But she wasn't answering. Well, that was to be expected.
"By now you should know who this is," he said as he left his sixteenth message. "Just pick up the phone so I can explain."
He hung up and sighed, deciding that calling her again would be foolish. He'd just have to wait for her to call back.
If she ever chose to.
Lauren decided that ignoring Kame was no longer an option and she picked up the phone and began listening to the voicemails. All of them consisted of some variations of 'call me back, Lauren. I need to talk to you'.
She wasn't sure if she wanted to hear an explanation.
It wasn't as if she didn't like the kiss. In fact, it was quite the opposite, and that's what worried her. She and Kame had been friends for quite some time. Taking it a step further could destroy everything if it ended. She was much more comfortable with the way things were now, even if she was interested in something more. She needed a good enough reason to jeopardize their friendship. And she needed to explain this to Kame. She sighed and picked up her cell phone, dialing Kame's number.
Ring Ri-
"Lauren!"
"Start talking," she said.
"I couldn't help it," Kame rushed out. "You were just, cute at that moment. Actually I always think you're cute. I just never said anything."
"Why the sudden change of heart?" Lauren asked, sitting up on the couch.
"It got harder to keep it in," Kame replied. "It got harder to watch you hanging out with Jin or laughing with Junno or dancing around with Koki. I got jealous but I kept quiet. I didn't know if you felt anything about me. But the fear that someone else would confess to you was a burden. I had to let it out somehow."
"By kissing me?" Lauren asked.
"Doesn't the saying go that actions speak louder than words?" Kame asked quietly. "And your action was loud and clear."
Lauren froze.
"It was a split second," Kame said. "But nevertheless I felt it. You kissed back, didn't you?"
No answer.
"You did. So why did you push me away?"
"Because I thought about what would happen if we went through with anything. Kazuya you and I both know our friendship would never be the same if we broke up."
"And automatically you take a pessimistic point of view."
"I'm taking a realist point of view," Lauren replied. "I've seen it too many any times. I wouldn't want to lose you."
"You wouldn't," Kame replied. "I promise you wouldn't!"
"That's not good enough for me."
"Then try this," Kame replied, now pacing his apartment living room. "Try waking up every morning to an empty bed. Try coming back to an empty apartment every single night after work. Try eating alone. Try hating the sight of every couple in love. And try living a life without me. Does it kill you? Because it kills me every day."
Lauren felt her heart sink.
"I'm waiting," Kame said.
The line clicked the Lauren knew he had hung up. She sighed.
'And try living a life without me. . . I'm waiting . . .'
Now it was her turn to make an impulsive decision. She grabbed her jacket and keys and rushed out of the door.
Kame sat on his couch playing around with his cell phone. Would she come? Had he pressured her too much?
"She probably won't come," he said.
But he continued to wait. And thirty minutes later he heard a knock on his door. And jumped up and flung it open to see Lauren standing there.
"Lauren . . ."
"I admit it," she said quietly. "I hate thinking about it."
Kame just waited. She wasn't finished.
"This can work, right?" she asked, still quiet.
Kame laughed and pulled her into a hug. For a slight second she tensed in surprise. But then she relaxed, leaning against him.
"I think this will work out just fine," he said.
THE END!
