this weekend just past I was in ATL for my first Groove Phi Groove conclave (along the lines of a national convention). Shit was most definitely fun as hell. I met mad Grooves from my area and some from other areas too. Ravel from Bowie State, a guy from Lincoln U, like 6 guys from Adelphi U, all of em crazy. So I'm like, with a whole new appreciation for my organization now. Seeing how things are handled on a national level, how other chapters are growing and doing big things. Like one dude moved to Memphis, was all by himself out there, only Groove in that area, now in the course of a year he has like 9 people interested in joining Groove. So the national office gave him a chapter, and soon there'll be a thriving mid-south chapter of Groove Phi Groove.
seeing stuff like that, makes me see how easy we have it at my chapter. We're the Mother Bear Chapter, because Groove was started on my campus 44 years ago. So cats look up to us. But unfortunately, we're a young chapter because we fell into inactivity during the late 80s I think. Once there's no more Grooves on your campus, your chapter goes inactive, for obvious reasons, then there's a process to restart that takes like a year or two. But now we have 13 financial members on campus, but prolly like 7-9 cats who are usually active. Still, thats a good number, lotta campus only have 1-3 guys. But I want us having like 20 cats on campus. We gotta do more stuff to make ourselves visible. Advertise our events better, make sure people get the word despite Greeks tearing our fliers down. Aint that a bitch, we try to do somethin positive on campus by having forums for people to discuss pertinent issues, and niggas hate and tear our shit down? Ah well, we'll get through it without reciprocating. Niggas wouldnt hate if they wasn't jealous.
So I got some ideas for making us more visible. One we gotta have more fun, throw a party or two. The intellectual shit is great, but people are getting the wrong idea when it seems like that's all that we do. And we're starting to learn steps again, yes a step show is coming. Hopefully sometime this year if we learn enough steps this year. Right now we know two, prolly need to learn at least like 3 or 4 more to put on a good show. and we'll prolly invite a couple other non-pan-hellenic orgs to step. All the while, we gotta visit other campuses more, especially those that are like an hour away.
I actually wrote yesterday, got inspired from a cypher on
hiphopverses. rhymes been flowin out of me more than earlier this summer. so of course I'm happy. these cypher rhymes I'll prolly use whenever I start a mixtape. I figure if we can get maybe like 3 more cats in our crew, we can do real solid mixtapes, cuz its hard for us to write multiple verses to jacked beats, so with more people we'll only need to write one verse a piece. usually I can write one verse, then I'm spent and tired of the beat, because I already heard it before. there's a good chance that adding so many people won't happen tho, because its nigh impossible to find emcees who are nice and whose styles mesh wit ours. We've already met 3 people who for various reasons aren't in the crew yet. 1 has the skills but thinks real solo-ish, not sure how he'd do in a group. 1 is so involved with the football team he really doesn't have time. 1 doesn't really have the skill yet, but he's coming around so soon he might become more involved. And there's 1 new cat, a freshman who has the skill but spits really gangsta. Not sure about his style goin with ours. Still I'm lookin up...
