Yeah, 44 beats me too. And sure -- you basically never fold a set on the flop, so I'd have been hanging in -- raising even! -- if I had 44.
To be honest with you, though, I generally play hands as strong as the one I had as though I'm just not going to run into quads. If you catch quads against me, and I have a high set, you can expect I'll pay you off pretty well.

Pocket pairs are tough to judge, espically if they are small.
