Psychoanalysis

People, they ask, "so you're a psychology major?"

They ask, "so are you, like, analyzing me right now?"

And I wonder what makes them say that. Are they just saying it to try to be funny? Are they trying to start a conversation? Is there something that makes me unique and they honestly want to know if I inherently analyze people for personality traits because of the mere fact that I've taken an obscene number of psychology credits over the course of the last year, or do they ask everyone they encounter with this not-so-unique feature this question?

Or is it not me at all? Is it something about the person asking the question that makes them do this? I wonder what their mother was like. How she treated them, bathed, hugged, fed them too much or too little. Do they get along with their father? Or did they have such a shitty childhood that their self-esteem is virtually non-existent and irreparable, causing them to succum to a feeling of social "awkwardness" by feeling they have a social obligation to fulfill, otherwise this stranger will think they are insignificant in some way, shape or form. I also wonder if this insecurity regarding social situations may have other influences, such as introversion, perhaps combined with an unconscious yet powerful need to fit in with peers.

So I lie. I say, "yes."

I say, "yes I am."
