Patrick cut the ribbon off the package of sirloin steak he'd purchased on his way home. The cab driver had made rude remarks about making the extra stop, but the human sausage Pat had tried to make had gone bad. It hadn't tasted right anyway.
It had, however, made Pat want to learn how to cook. It seemed liked something a sophisticated person would know how to do, and Patrick was, after all, all about impressing his colleagues.
Just as he was getting out some Extra Virgin Olive Oil, the doorbell to his apartment rang. Patrick wiped his hands off on a pastel striped Gandarino hand towel as he made his way to the door. He opened it to find a FedEx delivery man. Patrick thanked him and brought it back into the kitchen with him.
It was about the size of a shoe box. Patrick couldn't remember having ordered anything lately. Curious, he tore off the FedEx packaging and found a purple-paper wrapped box. He tore through that packaging as well and lifted the lid from the box. Inside was an exquisite knife-sharpening kit, made by Lansky. It came complete with oil, different sized rods, angle guides and a very thorough looking instruction manual.
Patrick's eyes lit up as he pulled each piece out and admired it. This would come in handy, not only for his budding cooking skills, but... for other things as well. Patrick was getting all kinds of ideas now.
Wondering who this perfect gift could be from, Patrick picked the FedEx package back up and looked at the return address. There was none. That wasn't possible. There had to be a return address to get the thing shipped out. Patrick frowned slightly and thought back to the delivery man. Pat suddenly realized he hadn't been asked to sign for the delivery. The employee's uniform had looked genuine, the businessman thought, but he couldn't be totally sure. It's not as if Pat went around scrutinizing FedEx employee's.
Now even more curious, Patrick scoured the box and kit for any clues. Below the padding in the bottom of the box was the only clue he really needed: a Joker card.
