This is a hat pattern that I designed:
Herringbone Slipped Stitch Hat
Yarn:
A: Burgundy, worsted weight, 1 ball
B. White, worsted weight, 1 ball
C. Dark Red, worsted weight, 1 ball
Needles/Notions:
1 US 8 circular needle
1 US10 circular needle
Cable needle (optional)
Stitch markers (3)
Tapestry needle
Herringbone Twists Pattern (adapted from "2-color Herringbone Twists," to be worked on a background of stockinette, rather than garter stitch):
Special Instructions:
PW1 - Purl 1, wrapping yarn twice around needle
Slip all stitches purl wise, holding yarn at back of work
Foundation Row 1 (WS): with A, P4, PW1 twice, *P6, PW1 twice*, rep. from * until 4 st. remain, P4
Foundation Row 2: with B, K4, sl2 dropping extra loops off needle, *K6, sl2 as before* rep. from * until 4 st. remain, K4
Begin Pattern:
Row 1(WS): With B, P4, sl2, *P6, sl2*, rep. from * until 4 st. remain, P4
Row 2: With B, K4, sl2, *K6, sl2* rep, from * until 4 st. remain, K4
Row 3: With B, P3, PW1, sl2, PW1, *P4, PW1, sl2, PW1* rep. from * until 3 st. remain, P3
Row 4: With A, K1, *slip 3 sts. onto cable needle, dropping extra loop and hold at back of work; K1; K2, sl from cable needle; sl1 onto cable needle and hold at front of work; sl1 dropping extra loop, K2; K1 from cable needle* rep. from * until 1 st. remains, K1
Row 5: With A, as Row 1
Row 6: With A, as Row 2
Row 7: With A, as Row 3
Row 8: With C, as Row 4
Repeat these 8 rows, changing colors every 4 rows.
Hat:
With smaller needle and A, CO 90 sts.
Work in K2, P2 rib for 11 rows.
Switch to larger needles, work Foundation Row 1.
With B, work Foundation Row 2 and Rows 1, 2, and 3.
Continuing with the Pattern Stitch, work 4 rows of A, 4 rows of C, 4 rows of A, 4 rows of B, and 4 rows of A.
With C, Knit rows 4 and 1 of pattern.
Next Row: With C, K4, sl2, *K6, sl2 * twice, K1, place marker, K5, *sl2, K6* twice, sl1, pm, sl1, *K6, sl2* twice, K5, pm, K1, sl2, *K6, sl2* twice, K4.
Next Row (WS): P4, sl2, *P6, sl2 * twice, P1, slip marker, P5, *sl2, P6* twice, sl1, slm, sl1, *P6, sl2* twice, P5, slm, P1, sl2, *P6, sl2* twice, P4.
Decrease Row 1: With A, knit in pattern row 4 as established, EXCEPT: Knit the stitches that would have been slipped, AND: decrease as follows: Work 2 st. in pattern, K2tog. Work 17 st. in pattern, SSK, sl marker, K2tog. Work 17 st. in pattern, SSK, K1, sl marker, K1, K2tog. Work 17 st. in pattern, SSK, sl marker, K2tog. Work 17 st. in pattern, SSK, Work 2 st in pattern. NOTE: None of the slipped stitches should be part of the decreases.
Next Row: Purl all st.
Decrease Row 2: K1, K2tog, *knit to 2 st before marker, SSK, sl marker, K2tog* rep. from * twice more, knit to 3 st. before end, SSK, K1.
Repeat these last 2 rows until 10 sts. remain. Divide these 10 sts. in half, 3-needle bind off.

Weave in ends.
