I learned a couple of weeks ago that a friend and coworker of mine has breast cancer. She's only 36. This is ungood on many, many levels. So what do I do? I baked her half a batch of sugar-free rice-flour oatmeal cookies and cast on for Shedir. (And scheduled a gyno exam for myself with the intention of trying to talk my doctor into letting me get a mammogram ten years early.)

The oatmeal cookies were weird (who knew there were so many different kinds of flour!) but my friend just loved them. She doesn't eat sweets, hence the sugar free part (I'm so glad I asked), but she admitted to me that by the end of the day she had already eaten 3 of the cookies and had to put the rest in her purse for fear of consuming them all in one sitting.

Shedir is coming along about as fast as a hat can go with DK yarn on size 3 needles with 128 stitches and 1x1 cables every other round. I had found the pattern in Knitty's Fall '04 Breast Cancer surprise edition. I've just started the third repeat (of five) of the cable pattern before I start decreasing for the crown and I'm quite pleased with how it's knitting up.

I hope to take a picture with my camera (instead of with my phone) at a later date.
