Long finished object: Fair Isle Vest

Jan 08, 2007 20:34

Keeping in the theme of projects so insane that no one else would ever do them, I give you this Fair Isle vest that I made for my mother.

That's me wearing it in the photo. Shortly after I cut the fabric I had just knit. That's right. I cut the fabric. With scissors.

It's a technique called "steeking" or in some terrifying cases, "slashing". You machine sew down a collumn of stitches and then cut the fabric down the adjacent collumn. And somehow the work doesn't unravel.

Every online tutorial I found included instructions to have an alcoholic beverage before, during, and/or after the steeking process. You don't need to see those pictures, trust me.

The pattern called for a zipper, but instead I added a simple silver clasp for the front, right at the horizontal black line on the chest.
