ADMIN: Public shaming and banination

Nov 08, 2006 20:06

Well.

Someone has been very, very, very busy being an asshole.

Since thirdjane has been so busy, we've decided to relieve her of the burden of membership in knitting_snark.

Go be an asshole somewhere else. You're not welcome here.

11/15/06 EDIT: Since the link between the trolling asshole and thirdjane are tenuous at best, and because her friend heatherlayne_n has come to her defense, ( Read more... )

how to get banned, admin

Oh dear. I'm afraid there has been a horrible horrible mistake. After several emails, when the mod (who I very much appreciate and who was perfectly kind and apologetic all the way through) told me who she thought had made those comments in my journal, I was utterly shocked. I've known thirdjane for about two years, on GreatestJournal.com before LJ, and none of that sounded anything like what I thought she would ever say. But the mod said she was the only person on my f-list who was also in this community, so I believed her and let her ban Jane. I shouldn't have done that, I should have gone with my gut instinct. I'm really sorry about that, Jane ( ... )

This is the way bannings are handled in this community. thirdjane should know that, as one of the requirements for membership is reading all of the admin posts. This serves the dual purpose of exposing those who break the rules and deterring others from acting like jerks. Therefore, in the context of the community, we don't consider this rude or without warning.

That's what I figured; it goes along with the feel or theme of the community, and I do think those who break the rules in such a way deserve this manner of banning. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm sorry Jane got banned unfairly, and I wish she would be added back since I, for one, believe that she did not make those comments. However, as I said, it is of course up to the mods and what they decide is true or not. Thanks for reading, though.

Do you log IPs on your journal? The mods may or may not be able to help figure out who the anonymous poster really is.

I already went through that with Natalie, but thanks for the thought. I just now started logging IPs (both for this reason and some other creepy comments in another post I just got today), but unfortunately it's not retroactive. *Sigh* It's not going to kill me if the person isn't caught, I would just like to see justice enacted, you know? But I don't know what more can be done. Unless they turn themselves in, which I doubt, they'll get away with it.

I'm really sorry someone felt the need to be a jerk to you and I admire your ability to keep your cool. I hope this is cleared up soon.

Comments on the original snark suggest that thirdjane was not involved...

Really? Explain how.

thirdjane's comment is something like "I know her and she's really sweet, but that is a pretty silly post". I mean, obviously not watertight, but since heatherlayne is also saying it wasn't her, I suppose it's worth mentioning.

Yes, people are never ever duplicitous. How could we have missed that. [/sarcasm]

I think that was unnecessarily rude.

I tend to agree because it seemed a lot more subversive to post anonymously. Particularly if she and heatherlayne IM each other on a regular basis judging from heatherlayne's reply above. There's also the difference in writing 'styles', though that certainly could be faked.

I think it may have been someone else and what a shame that the IP was not logged.
