learning cables

i've decided it's high time i add cables to repertoire of knitting skills. where to start? can anyone suggest a decent book or online tutorial that teaches this technique?

i'm also wondering if i should start off with a worsted weight yarn until i get the hang of cables. is it actually harder to start with something in sock or lace weight?

and one last question- is it absolutely necessary to use cable needles when knitting cables, or can it be done on dpns/straights/circs?
