Differing row gauges... will this be a problem?

So I'm planning to make the Dragon Scale Gauntlets. (Some of you may remember my earlier post with a couple of questions about the pattern.) I haven't even started the actual gauntlets yet and I'm already having problems ( Read more... )

I would't worry about it. The ribbing will stretch widthwise as you wear it, which should shorten up the length a little. It will stretch more than the dragonscale pattern, since that's just how ribbing works.

If you're really worried about, swatch a few inches in the round. You'll be out a few hours of knitting if it doesn't work out, but that's a whole let less than a whole gauntlet's-worth. Sometimes you just have to try and see.

Agreed. Knitting is stretchy so this probably won't be a problem. The stretching in the ribbing vs. the relative stability of the chart will probably solve the issue. Try it out (as the previous poster said) and make sure you try it on before you decide whether it works. (it may look weird flat but correct itself when you put it on because of the stretching ( ... )

Thanks to both of you for the advice! I'll just dive in and see how it goes, I guess.

I actually thought of short rows just before I fell asleep last night. Having confirmation that it would work is nice. I'd prefer to not have to deal with it if possible, because I've never tried them and this project has a lot of new things for me already. ;) But I'll give it a shot if I need to.

did you knit your swatches in the round? you can swatch for either the ribbing or the pattern stitch- so i would pick one and go with it.

and remember, knitting in the round can give you a different gauge than flat knitting. you should be fine- the ribbing makes the gauntlets have a bit more give to them!

I knit my swatches in the faux-round - always knitting from right to left and leaving a strand of yarn across the back rather than turning the work.

Thanks for the response! :)
