Hello lovely knitting mavens. I am in need of some assistance. I have ljsearched for a striped tote pattern or FO, but I haven't seen anything that suits my needs. I am looking for a striped tote-bagish pattern that is appropriate/easy for a newish knitter. Not that it has to be extremely simple, but not too simple as to look boring ( Read more... )

in the most recent Knit It mag I was flipping through last night they had a diaper bag pattern (take off the outside pockets) it could work for dance shoes with the flap. It used two colors and was quite cute.

Hmmm...I'll have to go to the bookstore! I generally use the internet since I don't know any actual knitters in my area, so I didn't think of magazines!! Thanks. (oh, no...know I'll have to subscribe to more magazines ;))

My daughter and I were in the check out line at the super walmart and lucky for me the knitting mags were on my side on the stand so I sent her over so I could flip through. Some cute baby things, sweater, pants, shoes, socks. A mandrin collar sweater, felted purse, dog toy, and soem other cute stuff. I try to make sure there is at leasst three things i would make before i pay the $5 at the checkout. Friends having baby's won out with the baby items that weren't boring.

Sometimes I find that knitting mags have more advanced projects than I am up for. It is good to have imput from others.

You could always just knit a rectangle and then use a circular needle to pick up stitches around the edges and knit a tube to the desired length.

You said you wanted to stripe it so at that point just change yarns to make the striped the desired widths.

Do you cut the yarn when you switch? or leave it attached to the skein?

I usually break the yarn between stripes. If you don't to that you end up with hopeless tangles.

If you're willing to work without a net pattern, I made a randomly striped satchel with a cover flap that was loosely based on a Knitty pattern. (And by "loosely based," I mean that I looked at the Tasha pattern and used the idea of a long narrow strip that makes up the sides of the bag and a cabled handle, but instead of making separate front, back and bottom I just made one big rectangle for all three that was large enough to create a flap as well, and sewed it to the ends of the strap like in the Tasha pattern.)

Very cute. I love how it looks like the morning sky. I drive to the hospital every moring at 0545, and the sky over the sound look just like that! Beautiful! May I add it to my memories?

Thanks for getting that -- it was designed to look like a dawn sky! (I even put on some silver star-shaped beads up in the darker regions.) Memory away, though I don't know if you can put a gallery pic in memories -- if not, you can go for my finished project and/or separate components journal posts.
